Depends-like if you said what looks better Uncharted - which has that more animated, comic bookish look, or Killzone 2 which besides Heavy Rain is the most realistic looking game I think I've seen on a console to date. In this case however I think both games make some pretty good lookin art. |
Killzone 2 looks great, but disproportioned muscle bound men fighting guys in gas masks is not a realistic artstyle, nor do I think that is what they are going for... COD4 or Resistance are more realistic looking, as far as humans.
Heavy Rain is the only game that I have ever seen that comes so close to realism. It definitely looks as good or better than a lot of prerendered stuff. It's also realistic from a style pov.
Is it art, yes.
But that doesn't mean it is good art. Good art is timeless. Will we look back at this in ten years and say it still looks great?
It's like looking at Crash Bandicoot 1 and looking at the latest Crash Bandicoot game. The first one isn't technically as good. But it is inspired compared to the latter.
The funny thing is in 10 years, we will probably see a sreen shot of HR and say, "Haha I remember how we thought it looked so real".
It's all a matter of opinion if it will be the best looking of '09. Me I say:
Technically, sure.
Artistically, maybe... does realistic make good art?
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

So true. I still think Donkey Kong Country looks much better than 90% of the games out there.
How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...
Hmm, graphically, I think probably so. I do, however, believe that the visuals are slightly over-rated, for many reasons, including functionality(Think claiming that FFVIII has the best graphics on the PS1, because of summons spells).
Gameplay wise, I have my eye on Heavy Rain, FFXIII, Madworld, Bayonetta, and Alan Wake, atm.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.

It depends when/where that part of the world is being portrayed. Some places just aren't as coloful as others, such as my old neighborhood during fall when it's raining. It's only two colors at that point, dull orange and gray.
