Forums - Sony - Could the PS3 take the place of PS4 Next Gen?

If Sony is looking into the Ps3's Potential Couldn't they wait to release the PS4 in the 9th Gen? They can take advantage the PS3's lifetime of ten years. It seems this Gen is just underway yet Microsoft and Nintendo are already thinking of the next Console.

It could be possible but once the next Xbox and Wii 2 come out that'll hurt them big time in sales and then they'd probably be force to release a PS4 or atlease something new to the PS3

Do you seriously think that Sony hasn´t allready started to think about the next PS?

You know that they do that the moment they released their console on the market as do all of them.

There will never be another Playstation.

When the PS3 has run its 10 years, taking all of Sony's money and sending them plummeting down the stock market, Sony will end this playstation nonsense

Its not really possible ...

Right now a large portion of PS3 games are justified because they can be released on the PS3, XBox 360 and PC which (greatly) reduces the risk of developing such expensive games. After the next systems are released from Microsoft and Nintendo it is unlikely that there will be any system which is close enough in processing power for the PS3 to (really) gain that much benefit from multiplatform releases; what this means is that they would have to have sold enough PS3 systems, and to be selling enough PS3 systems on a regular basis, to have a large number of games being released exclusively for the PS3.

Now, the question is what is the selling feature of the PS3 after the next generation has began?

Its processing power will be easy to (dramatically) surpass by even a very inexpensive system
Blu-Ray will be inexpensive to include in any system
The PS3's controller and user interface will be (far) behind the times

About the only thing the PS3 will have going for it is the price, which isn't much of a selling feature.

if the ps3 doesn't last as long as they want to, then they'll be forced to release a new console. hopefully it won't be a playstation. that name is old now and annoying now. a new name may help the gaming division redeem it's popularity. works for nintendo.

This wont be determined by Sony, but by and competition and what they have to offer.

Ugh...

1. but when PS3's install base is much bigger, PS3 won't need overlap with another console, or PS3 can just be the weakest console to develop for, no problem there.

2. Regarding a console having "only" price rather than power going for it, see PS2 sales after the current gen got underway with the release of 360 (ie, PS2 trashed 360 for a long time).

Neither did PS2 after 2.5 years.

Which is so obvious that it shouldn't have needed saying, winky smiley face aside.
