Forums - Gaming - Can I play online with this speed on wii/xbox360/Ps3?

Wow, this is fun :)

edit: slightly better result. I'm on a fiber optical connection, btw. :)

Man! that connection is ungodly!!!! O_O!!!

Ping is ridicolously insane too!!! Only 7ms to ping 150miles!!! Well you are on an optical fiber connection, so it's quite right.

You guys in Japan are so lucky!

I saw a couple of other great connection in this thread, not so much for DL bandwidth as for damn fast ping, which are crucial for good online gaming (the lower the better!!!), and for a quite fast upload (like it was and HDSL connection).

Here is mine at work:

The one I use at home is slightly slower on download but it's faster on upload and has a ping of roughly 40ms ping on the same server....

Since I live in Italy I guess I can't complain!!! :)

sweet

Did you try the Tokyo server? I got slightly better speed from there compared to the Yokohama server.

Ok, trying the Tokyo server ...

Yeah ... slightly better ...

Again.... no wonder why you guys kill us on Halo3 "et similia"... we won't even see you going this fast... look what happens when I ping on an American server in NY:

as you can see, overall speed doesn't change much (DL or UL) as is the ping that nearly triples!!! we will never be able to beat a good player if we give them already ~0.1 second of advantage!

Here what happens if I ping in Springfield, MO:

Again, a bit slower and ping time grows again!

Please Ramuji and other with fast connections try these test as well an compare the results!! It will be interesting to see what are the results!

@the OP: the connection itself is quite slow, but what really kills you is the really slow ping!

EDIT: Oh, and BTW here's the result when I ping the server in Tokyo (the one in Yokohama must be shite!!!):

HUGE drop... but also 6050 Miles... so... no wonder!!!

Look at how much I suffer:

Is that an ISDN connection??? I used one for so long and left it not so long ago! what gives me puzzle is the ping time: should be a lot lower than that: around 70-80ms as ISDN is very fast (It goes even faster than some ADSL provider (AKA: mommy's ADSL :) )  but doesn't "carry" much data)!!!

depends on the game

My connection isn't the speediest, I can see it when playing most online games. It's good enough for me though:

You have to envy those Japanese.
Over 9000...ehhmm over 53000 kb/s!?!
I am happy when my connection is at 2000 kb/s with a horrible upload rate of 100 kb/s.

OP: You're connection is fine, just don't be making any more internet traffic (downloading/uploading) whilst playing.

Also, don't host games, because you need at least 512k to be a good host (I find)

I play using a 1.5mb/256k connection and I rarely have issues. If it were the speed test it'd translate to around: 1,400k~ download and 230k~ upload (approx. as it never hits the max).

So sorry to upset you bro. but even if you have a quite good connection, your ping over that distance is just below average... you should be getting like 30-40ms for that kind of connection, not 99ms as you have!

See, fotr online gaming it's not like that you have to have tons of capacity on your connection as packets are really small (maybe 64B to 1KB), what gives you advantage (and hence no lag) is ping time from your console/pc to the server and back!

Connection with higher ping are good to send and receive loads of data, for work or for fun (images, projects, videos) but aren't the best for playing!

I was playing for some months on LIVE! on an old ISDN connection which maxes out a theorical 128/128 Kbps (with two channels online) and I was still able to beat some asses on Halo 3 (team rockets was unplayable though). Even if not much capable it was quite fast. That's why US college guys are so lucky: even if they don't have much bandwidth they have monstrous ping time!

Also, think about this: if you hook up on an old 10Mbps LAN switch to play locally(even inferior to some new and blazing fast internet connection, such as ramuji) you still get no lag as the ping time is virtually zero. I bet it won't even saturate the bandwidth (unless there are tons of console /pc hooked up)! So that proves that people don't need ungodly high bandwidth, just a good connection and really low ping!

Ok, here's my test with the NY server:

And for Springfield:

Seems good enough. But don't do too many things at once. Like gaming and vonage, or torrent clients.
