Platformers is not a very popular genre as it was in 80's and 90's. Customization or not, LittleBigPlanet is in essence is a 2.5D platformer and a very basic one at that. I have a "hardcore" gamer friend who owns a PS3 and says that LBP "looks lame." I doubt most hardcore gamers, outside of those who have been keeping tabs on it, will find this game appealing. Do you truly think jumping on and riding platformers from the start to the end of a level will appeal to hardcore games? I doubt it.

Yes, this game offers customization but it will only go as far as the creator will take it. With good levels likely costing money and everything else being crude or average, those without imagination won't have fun with LBP. I think it's very likely that players will make 2 or 3 levels and get bored from the actual work required to make something great as stated above.

LBP will be tiny.

User generated content is not going to cost money. So that point has been eliminated.

Most content is not going to be good, but there will be a ratings system. There's a reason why Youtube is the most popular thing on the internet and it's not because most of the content is good.

As for creators getting bored: Again, have you ever heard of Unreal Tournament or Counter Strike? Much of the content is user created. There's not that many creators out there, but if you know anything about those games, you would know there's a ton of amazing user content available. It is the ability to play those user created content what makes those games so popular.

Are those games "bridging games?"

Hell yeah!

You should see my little cousin and my dad playing CS 1.6! Then when my grandparents come over we have a LAN party!

The biggest problem came when little johnny said "I fragged that bastard".. my mother misheard and now thinks little johnny is gay...

Assuming casuals do buy this game...

are most of them really going to get past the 50 levels the game comes with it the first place to even attempt navigating the online user content system?

Really it's replayability will be dependent on how well the content system is set up.  Hopefully better then just the little map option they showed off when it first started.  As you'll want to promote the differing stuff and different genres within the game.

Which would be hard to find if it's just all slopped together even if rated by quality.

Though I agree with you, I guess the argument would be that it is fun to beat the 50 levels, so if the gamer is told that they can get more levels, they would get them. Besides, doesn't matter if they play it ever again or not, once it is sold it counts, right?.....right??

@jman8

I may be mistaken, but I thought I heard one of them say that in order to encourage people to make good levels, it is possible for people to sell their levels. Could you or anybody send a link that says otherwise? That would be great cuz the money issue would seem a real detriment.

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

From what I've read there is some learning curve to the game. I'm not sure if platformers appeal that much to casuals. I don't even think Mario platformers pull in that many casual users anymore.

The real casual growth is from titles like Wii Sports, Brain Age, Wii Fit, etc. because those games can be played by just about anyone without any learning curve.

I already explained this in an earlier post in this thread. Here let me post it again:

"Exactly. Look at games like Echochrome or Counterstrike or Unreal Tournament. In all those games, there's a few end users creating levels, which in turn leads to a very excited much larger user base who just plays the levels. Of course all the games I mentioned are "hardcore" games, but where LBP differentiates itself is in the relatively simple platforming gameplay that anyone can recognize from the original Super Mario games. It's that recognizable gameplay and charismatic cutesy sackboys and girls that will draw in the casuals, not the level creation. "

Read the thread next time.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Who cares if this game sells to casual gamers or not? As long as it sells good at all, is what matters. Either way, it's all about marketing, I know "casual gamers" that don't even touch their Nintendo Wii games anymore, but does Nintendo give crap? no, because they already have their money. Sony could probably give a rat's ass if casuals don't make levels or play them on a regular basis as long as they bought it in the first place.

LBP will be huge.

LBP is a platformer, lol. Its not all about building maps, its about playing the millions of levels that will be created. 50 levels come with the game at launch, this was more than enough to keep players occupied during the Mario days, was it not?

I think a lot of you are missing the point of this game in a lot of ways. Just because you don't like one aspect of the game doesn't mean its going to fail. This isn't only for the hardcore like shooters are.

Some people will buy these games just because of the sackboys. Some for the platforming capabilities of the game. Some for the community aspects. Some people for the freedom on being able to build anything you want. Other people just for the hype.

Also, have you ever heard of LEGO's before? If you enjoy building levels its not about the finished project, but getting there and trying out new ideas. You dont have to start all over again on ever level, you can edit other levels and add your own twists to it.

And in a lot of cases, you are not building a level entirely by yourself. In my case, I will be building this levels with my GF most of the time (LBP is the game she is most looking forward to this year.)

This game is absolutely going to be a hit. I have no doubts about it. It will be the most talked about game this year. (Yes, more than Gears 2)

@ Paki

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/07/21/scee-littlebigplanet-user-generated-content-free-at-launch/

"SCEE and Media Molecule can guarantee that all consumer-generated content will be free at launch. We know how important this is to the LBP community and what we want most is for people to enjoy playing, creating and sharing their content," SCEE told Eurogamer after being notified of David Reeves' statements. They emphasized that Reeves "was talking about how user-generated content could potentially evolve in the long term" and that any future direction of LBP "will include the community and focus purely on enhancing the user experience."

The charging for content idea was tossed around as an example of how LittleBigPlanet could evolve into something not unlike the Xbox Live community games portal. It's not something that's set in stone and is definitely planned for.

Imagine if the best creators got the opportunity to charge for content. Yeah it would mean we would have to pay, but it would also encourage creators to keep making stuff and to make that stuff even better. I don't understand why everyone's so worried.
