Forums - Sony - New PS3 may already be using 65/65 chipset

I said this along time ago in one of those "360 price cut?" threads. You know one of them that turned into "360 can cut price because hardware revisions Ps3 can't"

I said "I'm pretty sure the new models will have the new chipsets. If you are going to be putting new chipsets in anyways why not wait to realease the new model? Also Sony showed profit this last Quarter MS didn't"

Then I got wailed on. "No way blah blah blah"

Yes I thought the new chipset was in these models. Now we'll have to see how their division looks with them in. (I thought they would put the 45nm ones in though... i could have sworn I heard they were producing them for Ps3's.... oh well that just means they are saving them for Ps3 slims.)

Oh yeah I also showed them this picture.

For the people wondering about price reduction and size reduction

New heatsinks for the smaller chip compared to the old one.

So is the new chip better or the old one ?

The new one. Smaller, Cooler, Cheaper, more reliable, reduces size and cost on other parts such as fans and heatsinks.

Ok i see thank you

^ You're welcome. Just to add some more information they started with 90nm on both the CPU (Cell) and GPU (RSX) and shrunk both of them down to 65nm. They are in the process of shrinking the Cell to 45nm right now.

At the beginning of the year Sony and IBM had announced they had shrunk down the CELL to 45nm. I believe it was at CES. So it wouldn't be surprising if they got that chip in the system by the end of the year. If they get that chip in by November, and MS selling 360s like mad (like I expect with the new price point), then it's not out of the question we see another November price cut for Sony. In those last three months of the year, so much software gets sold that console makers can actually afford to take losses on hardware and still show profits for the quarter. Just look Sony's financial results last Christmas season when they showed a profit after the 40gb release.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Cool, they need to get the PS3 down in price more towards mass market

Your acting as if they would cut the price by some drastic amount. True if they cut it by $100 that would be insane and sales would diffinatly be increased but whos to say they wont slash it by $50 If they serisouly go from 65-45 (Cell) and 90 - 65 (RSX) I doubt they'd see much loss on a $50 cut.

Shouldn't the new PS3's be using the 45nm Cell?

I totally agree with you. If they can get down to 45 CELL and 65 RSX, which is totally within reason considering all of Sony and IBM's talk, manufacturing costs would probably go down a ton compared to the 65 CELL and 90 RSX systems. In fact, if I had to guess, a $50 cut is definitely coming this November. And you're probably right that that would probably not increase Sony's losses much at all. What I want to see is Sony get real aggressive and get down to $299 and finally match the 360 premium. I know it's not likely, but I think they have enough compelling software to make up for the losses. Resistance, Motorstorm, and LBP alone will probably ship 6 million pieces of software if not more. If retailers buy each game for $50 a pop, that's $300 million back in Sony's hands just from 3 games.
