I will be really curious to see how the map looks in a month after the Convention effects have settled and the debates begin.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Obama: 273 (-8) McCain: 238 (+8) Tie: 27 (No Change)

  • MCCain continues to cut away into Obama's lead.
  • North Dakota went from Slightly Obama to Strongly McCain
  • New Mexico went from Weak Obama to Slightly McCain

Wow, there is a serious shift beginning to happen according to that site. Look at Michigan and Pennsylvania along with New Mexico and North Dakota. Ohio and Virginia also appear to be shifting to McCain.

I think this election is going to be damned interesting when all is said and done. What seemed to be a sure Obama victory is slowly dwindling into a tight race.

My one complaint about this site is it jumps too easily at the result of one poll. It had overestimated how many states were leaning Obama awhile back and currently overestimates how many states are leaning McCain. New Mexico is a great example.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/nm/new_mexico_mccain_vs_obama-448.html#polls

RCP Average 08/13 - 09/08 -- 47.0 44.7 Obama +2.3
Rasmussen 09/08 - 09/08 700 LV 47 49 McCain +2
CNN/Time 08/24 - 08/26 659 RV 53 40 Obama +13
Rasmussen 08/20 - 08/20 700 LV 48 44 Obama +4
Mason-Dixon 08/13 - 08/15 400 LV 41 45 McCain +4
Rasmussen 07/24 - 07/24 700 LV 49 43 Obama +6
SurveyUSA 06/17 - 06/19 539 LV 49 46 Obama +3
Rasmussen 06/18 - 06/18 500 LV 47 39 Obama +8

That just doesn't add up to a McCain advantage to me if you look at the numbers. You can't say a state has shifted off of one poll. It just doesn't work that way.

An incredibly interesting executive race AND and insane console race.
How lucky are we?!

Obama: 268 (-5) McCain: 270 (+32) Tie: 0(-27)

  • Nevada has went from Slightly Democrat to Slightly Republican
  • Florida has gone from a statistical tie to Weak Republican
  • According to today's map, McCain has just enough electoral votes to win the race

I think this will be the height of the McCain bounce.  McCain could pull Iowa or even Colorado, but I don't think that will happen.  The major changes that could go in favor of McCain would be that the poll results for places like Indiana, Ohio, and Virginia strengthen into stronger GOP support.

Yeah, McCain might be able to pull Colorado and he might have an outside shot at Michigan or Pennsylvania, though I really doubt it.

It's going to be hard for him to pull many more additional states. There just isn't much left to fight over on that map.

This will be McCain's peak, with the possibility of him getting Colorado as well. Soon, his bounce will begin to disappear and Obama will settle back into the lead.
