Doesn't really effect me but still it's nice that people won't get confused about which ps3 they need to buy.

Basically, it refers to playing songs from the PS2 games -- with a disc swap. It does not talk about, at least in this place, about BC.

As far as BC being overblown, I was in a Gamestop that just opened on Thursday. They had the original PS3 promo playing. Sony was trumping how the PS3 was the only conosle that had full BC. So it is overblown because Sony pulled it and in the minds of some who have not gotten over it, has blown it.

Plus, while $35 sounds like a lot of money for hardware, how much money will it cost in patches and programming?

MGS4 bundle says hi... If you're gonna say it's because of price that you dont' want to buy one, it means you never wanted to buy one ever. It's never gonna get any cheaper.

There should be a lot less "confusion" once hardware BC disappears completely.

All signs seem to indicate that the 80GB MGS4 bundle is the end of the line, and it's beginning to look like that bundle will be short lived, as in gone once the 160GB bundle hits retail.

Amazon is already marking it as a discontinued item, and with the 80GB Core, most consumers won't see the value in paying $100 more for a copy of MGS4.

Some have taken this to mean that we'll see a discount for the MGS4 bundle, but it's far more likely that Sony will simply stop production of the bundle altogether, along with the EE enabled MoBo.

It's going to be up to soft emulation if the PS2 is to have a future on the PS3.

Come on people, wasn't it obvious that SONY was gonna give it to us eventually???

Why else would they be contiually bringing out non-BC HW and discontinuing the 80 gig U.S BC model?

The clerks have seen in store are telling customers "The PS3 used to have full backward compatibility but the newer consoles don't anymore. They have a form of backward compatibility but I wouldn't count on it".

It's a step in the good direction but it's not finished.

I don't understand why this is a surprise to anyone, but at the same time I can't understand why anyone thinks that Sony will reintroduce PS2 BC anytime soon.

The two main reasons why Sony decided to phase out PS2 BC from PS3s were to lower the production costs of the PS3s and to reinvigorate PS2 hardware sales for as long as they can. Their first goal is a success since the PS3 should be profitable by the time the 80GB models hit later this month and their second goal will likely be reached when PS2 sales start to drop after the holidays.

Sony isn't going to reintroduce PS2 BC to PS3s through a firmware update until they stop making a ton of money off PS2 sales. This Christmas will continue to see great PS2 sales, but come January, expect to see them take a hit.

2 reasons why they took it away from us;
1. To cut costs on the HW, [SW emulators are much cheaper]
2. To help move more PS2's to raise revenue

IMO now that the PS2's are slowing a bit and we are comming up to Xmas, should be happening sooner rather than later.
