I have been bored this evening and fancied trying my hand at reviews. So I'll start with Call Of Duty 4.
Where to begin? War games are available by the bucket load, and it's increasingly harder for games to stand out. Whether it be a Sci fi setting or a gritty World War 2 take you can bet you will find more than enough to quell your thirst for trigger action. Where COD differs is not that it's the only available modern Warfare title, but it's perpspective.
The games introduction instantly promises the player so much, providing you with an instant take on the immense graphics that will follow throughout the game. The rain streams down as the ship sways in the seas, the waves crash over the sides all in a majestic way that seems like a melody. Playing through the game on veteran (the only real way to play) will provide more length to the single player game.
Firstly the Single player campaign is a good game, however it's not without it's flaws that turn a game which could have been close to lifelike into reminding you your playing a video game. The problems become more apparant as you progress on the hardest difficulty setting. For instance you and your AI teamates can be approaching a group of buildings where the enemy are pinned down. I know (you'll think) I'll take out the enemies in the windows by sniping and then concentrate on the ground enemies. 20 mins later and your still shooting the enemies in the windows. They RESPAWN indefinately!
This removes alot of tactics from the game and instantly reminds you it's just a game. They only stop respawning when you reach the building and are about to enter the door. It's something which really dissapoints you as you fell if this wasnt in the game and your tactics worked it would feel and play so much beter.
The graphics are very impressive throughout and provide a great feeling to the game. They are certainly up there with the best of the generation so far. The weapons set is a good choice and the missions are of a good variety that provide the player with enough twists and turns to keep you intereted to the end.
If it wasnt for certain gameplay mechanic choices the game would have been far better in the campaign mode. Multiplayer though is certainly a blast. With added abilities such as air strikes when you reach a certain amount of kills without dying. The maps are brilliantly designed and provide some decent frontlines to fight at. Play with the right friends and you can have a tactical firefight till your hearts content.
Call Of Duty 4 is certainly a step up from it's predeccessors and makes a good attempt for the COD team into modern warfare. It's single player has it's faults but is still able to provide enough variation to be entertaining. If you like your warfare the game is definately an essential purchase, but if you are on the fence with them this will still be a rental first.
