I have been wanting to add to my list all day, but just picked movies I love from the top of my head. I really wish I had added The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Schindlers List.

Such Pig bait right there. Have to agree on pretty much all of them, but particularly the comedies. All are basically amazing writing that was flawlessly executed on screen. Off the top of my head, aside from the above quote: Fight Club - Norton and Pitt nailed a book to film transition that I basically thought was impossible. Sin City - Visually stunning, and nailed pretty much every aspect in the transition between mediums. Shawshank - Cannot turn the channel if this movie is on, regardless of what point it's at. If it's just starting, I'm stuck there for 3 hours, helpless to resist it. Ghostbusters - Peter Venkman may be my favorite single character in any movie, ever. Star Wars: A New Hope - The movie basically redefined movie-making. Empire may be the better overall movie, but A New Hope changed the world of cinema. |
What is pretty sad is when I can post Pearl Harbor as a masterpiece and the thread goes this long before someone cries foul. I'm losing faith in humanity.
I give that post a 9.8.

I would Classify my Top 3 movies as Masterpieces:
1. Arlington Road (For the script, and an ending to which is very unlike any other I've seen. The story is completely original and does not parallel other scripts)
2. Star Wars (Not so much for it's quality (because honestly it wasn't the greatest, outside of Special effects of course). The story to this movie had such incredible depth that it literally opened up an entire universe that has had many contributions to it since. It's a pretty simple tale in construct, but had a very epic feel to it. John Williams' Soundtrack is also a great asset to this film.. Gotta do some work, more later
"Let justice be done though the heavens fall." - Jim Garrison
"Ask not your horse, if ye should ride into battle" - myself
Forrest Gump.

-The Ring: the best, most intelligent horror film I've ever seen. Genuinely terrifying.
-The Grudge: 'The Ring Lite'. Less good in almost every way, but still worth gold.
-No Country for Old Men: an extremely exciting and original western thriller, where every single character is harsh and bad ass. Has a really cool unforgiving setting.
-There Will Be Blood: A film that takes 'slow' to the next level, but is still intriguing, and gradually works up to the best ending I have ever seen. You'll find yourself really getting emotionally involved with this movie and its characters.
-Pulp Fiction: One-liners, action, incredible dialogue, fantastic actors, humour: Pulp Fiction has all that and more. Probably the best film ever made.
-2001: A Space Odyssey: A hallucinant, trippy movie, which is so alienating that it's almost funny in places, yet had an undeniably strong symbolism. One of a kind.
-The Green Mile: 'Tearjerker' doesn't begin to describe it. This movie is like a fairytale, but a very sad and enchanting one at that.
-Atonement: I generally hate romantic movies, but this one was absolutely astonishing. The soundtrack contains some of the best music I've ever heard, and the integration of typewriters into the music is pure genius.
-Hot Fuzz: Maybe masterpiece isn't the right word, but it's certainly the best comedy I've ever seen.
-In Bruges: A very good soundtrack, great acting and over-the-top dialogue: what more can you wish for? On top of that, I have a (non-sexual) fetish for men in suits with guns and silencers, which is also the reason I'm such a Wesker fan, and this movie has a LOT of those guys.
-Happiness: Not everyone's cup of tea probably, but it's a fantastic black comedy that really shows how sick the human mind can get.
-The Ocean's Trilogy: I realize that they are very commercial movies that are hard to call a 'cinematic masterpiece', but the action is so fluent, the plot so impossible and the actors so cocky that these movies just make me happy. I really hate most blockbuster movies, but these ones are exceptions.
Also, while I don't want to offend anyone and respect your opinions, you can't call Transformers a masterpiece. If I had to put in into perspective, it'd rank top five of worst movies ever. There's no single way in which it's comparable to real masterpiece movies like Pulp Fiction (generally agreed to be one of the best films ever made).
I drink your milkshake.

While I would normally agree with you, Michael Bay has directed seven feature films.
Considering that Transformers probably made me want to shove ice picks in my eyes the least out of all seven, it can't possibly be a "worst five" film.
...
Wait, why the fuck have I seen all seven Michael Bay feature films? Sad. I need a drink.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

Even I can't say that. Wow, I think you might want to try a little stiffer drink, like something with strychnine.
I give that post a 9.1.
