Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 360 getting blu-ray drive

I was looking this up and it appears microsoft denied that they are getting a blu-ray drive

you didnt know? O_o

and your title is misleading.

"I like my steaks how i like my women.  Bloody and all over my face"

"Its like sex, but with a winner!"

MrBubbles Review Threads: Bill Gates, Jak II, Kingdom Hearts II, The Strangers, Sly 2, Crackdown, Zohan, Quarantine, Klungo Sssavesss Teh World, MS@E3'08, WATCHMEN(movie), Shadow of the Colossus, The Saboteur

misleading title, but to be honest i dont think it will ever have one

I don't think they ever will put a BD in the 360. The HD DVD addon didn't do too many sales if I recall, and adding a BD to their console legitimizes the BD further. I think they would much rather skip right ahead to direct download type services and never even touch the BD technology.

...

i was just wondering if it was POSSIBLE for them to get blu-ray since sony owns it

No it will help Sony out too much in royalties and that would not be good for MS.

Yes Sony publically invited Microsoft and Toshiba into the club, promising the Blu-Ray association will treat them like any other consumer electronics company. Microsoft once hinted towards choice, but it seems Blu-Ray will not be an option afterall to expand the 360 with.

I think the main reasons why this isn't going to happen is because it would further highlight the PS3's strenghts (including costs) of having an internal Blu-Ray drive for games as well as movies (top quality support) by default. Blu-Ray discs don't have to spin as much as DVDs to achieve good reading speed (due to higher density of data, 1 spin equals many times the amount of data being read) and they currently don't spin much for reading DVDs neither, good enough for PS2 compatibility and of course DVD playback, but not spinning fast enough for reading 360 DVDs, so that may be an obstackle for introducing a 360 with an internal Blu-Ray drive.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

The problem is that the Blu-Ray forum is not going to give them a cheap ass drive like Toshiba did with its HD-DVD drive. Toshiba was subsidizing the cost of the drives simply to increase the size of its userbase, and Microsoft was more than happy to abide if it hurt Sony.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
