Did it help the Xbox at all last gen?

Though to be fair. Sony still thinks they'll win first!

While microsoft has moved off a "second place" stance and talks more of revenue.

To be fair, 2nd place last Gen is comparing my post count to Soriku, This time around, being in second place will get you Games the Xbox wish they could have had.

The wii late third party support will allow any of the HD consoles to really survive.

You just need enough spin, any astronomical lead can be turned into evidence of fault as a result.

Ultimately it's a business. If there's no money in being second then it's simply not worth it. Although both companies have secondary agenda's - Sony to push Blu-ray and MS to keep Sony from owning the world's livingrooms.

So far in this gen coming second has come at the expense of billions of dollars. MS is at least starting to recoop initial loses, but Sony is still just losing money. If either of them will come out ahead by the time this generation is finished is still open for debate.

On the flipside Nintendo was very profitable in 3rd last gen.

MS needs to make money to show why they are in it there shareholders will only allow loses for so long.  I think they are happy to finally start showing profits.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

I give props to nintendo they make money no matter what, though I personally like my top of the line console from either MS or Sony

Of Course it's worth for MS to be 2nd, they are building their userbase, fanbase, people that enjoy what they offer. XBL and stuff like that, they started from the scratch last generation and trailed big time to the PS2, now they have a chance of proving that they can sell better and offer better then Playstation 3 which still does not live up to the expectations, and makes Sony lose gigantic amounts of money.

I really don't see ther 2nd place race as important usually. It's 1st place that matters. The Wii has that.

But, this gen, the 2nd place will be the best selling 2nd place system ever. (just need over 33 mil.) The Ps3 and 360 could both do this. And, it would be a special feat!

I disagree.  Look at it this way.

Last generation 2nd place got Xbox nothing.

Last generation 3rd place got Nintendo profit.

Other then that... 3rd place will get you games the Xbox wished it could have as well.  Since most games will end up being HD multiplatform.

Or at least will if the 360 is in third.

It's easy to port over a PS3 game to 360.  The reverse is hard though...

when it comes to getting games it's only important to the PS3.

Is Sony even still losing money on PS3 sales? Considering that the PS3 was practically breaking even in January, I find it hard to believe that Sony could still be selling PS3s at a loss after 9 months. I would think that the upcoming 80GB and 160GB consoles are profitable.

True but its a race for 1st place for a HD gaming system.  Developers make WII games and PS3/360 games.  The WII will NEVER be ported over to 360 or PS3  and a 360 PS3 game can almost not be ported over to WII it needs a total overhaul.  So the PS3 and 360 are fighting for devlopers so being ahead means the game is built for there platform and ported over to the other.

For some games the port os no nig deal for others the 360 to PS3 port was atrocious

I could give a rats ass about who comes in second. As long as the 360 continues to get awesome games, I will be happy. And it looks like it is guaranteed awesome games for the rest of this gen.
