Forums - Sales - Gfk Australis sales figures Q2 2007

April through June 2007 Australia sales, courtesy of GameSpot:

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia made some bullish statements last week about the PlayStation 3 outselling both the Wii and Xbox 360 in Australia week-on-week since its March 23 launch, and now industry trackers GfK Australia have confirmed the positive news for the PS3. Recently released GfK figures show that the PS3 was indeed the top-selling next-generation console in Australia in the last three months, but not by much.

Between April and June 2007, Sony sold 27,645 PS3s down under. The Nintendo Wii was just behind, selling 26,676 units in the same three month period. The Xbox 360 came in third at 21,440 units. The PS3 has now sold 54,728 units since its launch this year, while the Nintendo Wii has sold 106,538 since its December 7, 2006, debut down under. The Xbox 360 was launched in Australia on March 23, 2006, and has so far sold 181,561 consoles.

But when all game devices are taken into account, the real winner down under is Nintendo. GfK figures show that the Nintendo DS sold 74,435 units in Australia between April and June 2007, almost as much as all three next-generation consoles combined. The aging PS2 was the second most popular in the same period, with 45,492 units sold. The PSP, on the other hand, was the lowest-selling game device, selling 20,068 between April and June.

Latest GfK figures have also confirmed the PS2's massive install base in Australia since its launch--there are now 2,052,193 PS2s down under. The PSP, by comparison, has sold 288,757 units since its release on September 2005, while the DS has sold 589,873 in total since its February 2005 debut.

By the way, VGChartz data:

Q2 2007 sales:
DS: 56,760 (24% under)
PS3: 24,290 (12% under)
Wii: 28,498 (7% over)
360: 12,177 (43% under)
PSP: 44,735 (123% over)

Overall? Not very good.

Current LTD sales:
DS: 614,389 (4% over)
PSP: 334,785 (16% over)
360: 175,443 (3% under)
Wii: 105,954 (0.5% under)
PS3: 52,321 (4% under)

Except for overstating PSP sales a bit, all very very good there. So old data seems ok, but the current trends are a fair bit off.

well the PS3 launched 1 week before April started, and sold about the same amount in that week as they did over the next 3 months.

I wonder how much of those PS3 sales were from the beginning of the 3 month period compared to the Wii.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

Always thought that the Aussie PSP sales figures on VGChartz were a little high. These make much more sense.

Sort of surprised the PS2 isn't higher - although 2m sales is quite excellent. Its the only decently priced console here at the moment (although you can also get GC & Xbox systems for $99 or less).

The PSP is still quite expensive - around the price of a Wii, when you take 1 free game into account. I haven't seen a lot of them around.

I'm quite surprised that the PS3 has been keeping in line with the Wii - even after discounting the launch week.

Predictions for sales for the rest of the year (2x this period + Xmas):

DS: 300k

PS2: 200k

PS3: 85k

Wii: 140k

360: 110k

Will the Data on here be altered? I imagine the tracking for Australia isn't as accurate as the bigger nations.

Good news for Xbox360 imo.

In three months PS3 only outsold 360 by 6,000. With 360's 130,000 lead, Sony will never catch up at that rate (even assuming sales dont change one way or another, right now I'd assume they're swinging back toward 360)

only ltd figure i'd say has to change is the psp number, rest are within 5%

Well PS3 and X360 would have some thousands more and the Wii 1000 or 2000 less .Considering that... everything is between good margins .The PSP should be lowered ,but only some thousands as well .

So in 3 months the Wii only picked up 5k against the 360. At that rate it would take about four years for the wii to catch up. Looks like a strong country for the Box.

Australians are a very immature market as far as games go. As one myself, I watch mostly low quality sport games sell over here. The AFL series are very poorly made but the teens will continue to buy them. Shovelware sells very well in this country too... with movie releases often perferming better chartwise than Mario games. USA and Japan have much more in common with game sales than Australia does to either, leaving the hardcore niche gamer in the lurch down here.
