Forums - Gaming - We Can Do Better - The Top 10 Most Influential RPGs

Since the list does not say what kind of RPG, I'll say the most influenecial RPG of all time is Dungeons and Dragons.

Around the Network

Pokemon is another RPG that should be on that list. Say what you will about it, but its sold more then any other RPG series has by a long shot.

Yeah but that least is not listing influential games at all, i dont see Oblivion changing computer games more than PLanescape (i've started playing today again)

FFVII - influenced modern JRPG's strongly.
Final Fantasy - Started a very popular series of JRPGs.
DQ - See above.
ES: Arena - One of the originators of the open world design.
Rogue - Pretty much the original dungeon crawl, made its own genre (rogue likes)
System Shock - Early and influential WRPG/FPS - lead to games such as Bioshock
Ultima Online - popularlized MMOs
Everquest - Did the above but even moreso
World of Warcraft - See above
Might & Magic Series - The early games were quite influential
Ultima Series - See above
Pokemon - Most popular RPG of all time and practically created its own genre

@Guigr - He's talking about an earlier Neverwinter Nights. But not really hugely influential in my opinion, being the first to do something doesn't make it influential. I put Ultima Online in for my MMO instead.

there was a Neverwinter nights that was an mmorpg. I believe it might of been on that early Sierra online service.

That doesn't mean it has been influential.

Depends on how you define influential. It took the rpg to the masses, and spawned a successful television show, card game and movies. It was probably the most successful game ever to bridge the gap between games and other artistic mediums. But in terms of the mechanics of the rpg, no I'll agree with you there. It shouldn't be on the list if we're just talking about games in isolation.

BTW I read up on the old neverwinter nights. You really do learn something new everyday! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_(AOL_game) Have a read, its quite interesting.

Sorry but where are: Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, betrayal at krondor, Bard's Tale , Might And Magic, Ultima?

That list is weird.

Good and influential are not the same thing.

Most people in this thread don't seem to realize this quite yet.

Edit:  It's always good when the person below you makes the exact same mistake.  Makes you feel like your post was really worthwhile.

Kingdom Hearts-mixed two of the top entertainment companies together

You should rename the Top 10 Most Influential JRPG if you don't include Dungeon Master, Ultima VII, Might and Magic IV, Ultima Online, Planetscape Torment, of course Baldur's Gate, TES Daggerfall and TES Morrowind.

FYI Neverwinter Nights is not the first graphical MMORPG! It's not an MMORPG and it was released in 2002!
And Oblivion is not really an influencial RPG (sadly). The Witcher is (but future will tell).

That list of JRPGs that you're referring to is Miles' list, NOT MINE. Please read the original post.

Thank-you to Rath and Omac for pointing out the fact that I was talking about the MMORPG Neverwinter Nights, not the 2002 game. I've put some clarifications up in the first post. I agree, Ultima Online should probably be considered more influential. Well, I guess we can sort this out when the nominations are done, as both have been nominated now.

Thanks also to everyone who understands what this is about. Thank-you for the nominations so far. That's a big list, Rath!
