Microsoft FINALLY fixing its sh*tty D-Pad? Yes it is ... uhm ... sort of
by Jim Sterling on 08.20.2008 19 comments

Microsoft has today confirmed that a revised Xbox 360 controller with an improved D-Pad is going to be released in the future. Here's the catch though -- it's a limited edition item, and it's only going to be available in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Out there, somewhere, a thousand American shmup and fighting game fans just put their heads through windows.

"The new limited-edition green wireless controller offers enhancements to d-Pad functionality, which will add to the experience of playing games where the d-Pad is the primary control mechanism," stated an MS rep. "We're always looking to improve products and we made these changes based on feedback from gamers."

Quite why this improvement, which MS just admitted is something it knows gamers want, is so restricted, is beyond my grasp. The original D-Pad absolutely stinks, even if you only use it sparingly, so for Microsoft to limit it so thoroughly just doesn't make sense. Is Microsoft testing the water before a permanant replacement? It's the only logical assumption I could make.

Lukcily I dont use the d pad for most of my games

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

I read another article too which didn't say anything about it being limited.

Not that it bothers me that much. I have two controllers at the moment and an arcade stick for fighting games. D-pads suck period for fighters :P

High Def Movie Collection

Puke green sucks.

I'm so mad.

And the D-pad isn't really fixed, just less mushy.

Hopefully Microsoft will see that they fucked up and bring this to the US. Kind of like the Controller S for the Xbox that was made for the Japanese.

edit: Any Idea on how the D-pad is better?  From the picture, it looks unchanged.

Don't really care. The only thing i'll use my D-Pad for is fighting games and I'll use the PS3 for that. I like the D-Pad on the PS3 better for fighters.

I will probably get owned for this but.
What's the difference?

Now they just need to movie the left analog stick so it matches the right one. Movement and sight feel more sync if the sticks are mirrored.

Oh how wrong you are... Its been proven that better aiming can be done if the sticks are appart like that. We just need buttons on the back on the xbox controller and then they have done it and created a perfect FPS controller...

I'd love to try something like that out, Ben Heck made something like that not too long ago.

On a side note, that controller would be a nightmare for non-gamers/casuals.

Well that's awfully stupid...why not release it in America? they could make a great profit.

I read this yesterday and the article stated they bring this controller on the market especially for PES.

To be honest I don't really had many problems with the D-pad before;..Until I downloaded Bionic commando I really have issues with that grab thing X_X.

Can people really not learn to use the stick for fighting games? And people wonder why it's a dying/ultra niche genre?

Will you teach me to football?
