If they are losing $260 or $200 (3b/15m) per console no game or games is going to turn that into a profit.

Do we know how much profit Sony gets averagely pr. game sold?

Could be fun to know, just how big the attachratio had to be for Sony to break even xD

$260 is hardware loss, $200 is total loss for the division divided by the number of consoles sold. So that would be included already.

Sony probably profits an average of 5-10 per disc sold that would be an attach rate of 20 games per console on the high end of that profit per game, 40 on the low end. (It's really hard to figure avg/disc because most of the cost is in development. But 35 is the number that usually gets tossed around for revenue.)

Where Sony has a chance to profit is in the long term affects of PS3, in ten years 50%+ discs and disc players sold will be bluray. Sony sacrificed one division to win a format war. They aren't stupid, they knew that PS3 couldn't possibly have been profitable losing 200+ per piece of hardware. They were actually counting on losing more, because they thought they would sell more PS3's. Time will tell if it was a Pyrrhic victory.

Good points

the higher margin on PSN downloads might shrink the number of games needed to turn a profit too

Also, Home might be able to attract some money through sales of advertising space and sales of HD/music downloads. If it's ever released, of course! (j/k)

I think it's safe to assume that all the money from PSN downloads go towards PSN maintenance, I don't think there is enough money in downloads to go beyond that at least.

Also a good point, bandwidth and storage are expensive.

Well yeah. That's because Sony loss lead.

As anyone who's had a decent amount of buisness classes will tell you... loss leading basically always screws you on profits.

Loss leading is just a really poor philosphy unless you need a foot in the door.  After the PS1... the PS2 probably shouldn't of loss lead.  Then again if it didn't and the Dreamcast got a 2nd year alone on the market... maybe it's fate would of changed.

Probably not.... but maybe.

How were you not referring to sales? The initial argument was about software that outpaces the PS3 games in the market. And then somebody says "not in 2008" and you mention 2 games that are probably going to be lucky if they hit a million by the end of next year. I'm not saying they are bad games, if that were relevant then the word "software" wouldn't have been mentioned in the first place instead, you would have said "games." I'll probably end up buying both games for the Wii whenever I get my Wii BUT when it comes to sales, I do believe the Ps3 (and 360) will completely outsell the Wii games throughout the coming holiday. And that's not me saying they will outsell the Wii system

I believe it was the "Bigger & Better" thing. Someone crossed out better suggesting that the quality of the games wouldn't be there even if the sales were.

As such he felt the need to mention some games he saw as quality and better then the games being released on the PS3 during the same time period.

It would be like if I said i had better BBQ and Icecream.  Someone suggested i didn't have better icecream... me talking about icecream... then you saying it has nothing to do with BBQ.

Ah. For some reason I thought Soriku did that because I did read through the post but I kind of didn't catch it until I started typing my post. I really think they are going to be great games. I'll even say that de Blob and a couple of other ganes are going to be awesome. But I do still stick with saying that the games aren't going to sell nearly as well as anyone on here would hope they would.

I agree with that... but I think Wii software will still beat PS3 software by a very healthy margin this holiday season.  The only difference is that the Wii software will be more spread.

Holidays is when userbase matters even more for sales... since this is a time where the "non-hardcore" wallet spenders are going to be getting a lot of their games.

That and increased hardware sales = increased software sales as a lot of people buy multiple games with said consoles.

Last December Wii software was nearly at 360's level.  Last holiday season actually Wii held up very well to 360 software sales wise in general.

i believe the victory goes to axumblade here, hes quite true in syaing most of the wiis 'killer games' as it were will be coming out 2009.

that said i expect wii music and AC to be multi-million seller. i think cod5 will also sell a million, not sure about any others, they keep changing thier release dates

wats wrong with saying thAt? PS3 will do a lot better in the future, and it probably will pass it in software sales, but if u look at wats currently happening, then, yes u r right, the PS3 is going to have to do a lot if its to pass the Wii in software sales.

Sorry...but at this rate PS3 SW won't pass Wii SW. There's also bigger and better games coming out for the Wii...so the PS3 will never achieve that. I'll be surprised if it happens to outsell 360 SW.

not for 2008.

ToS: DotNW and Fatal Frame IV says hi.

Fatal Frame says "Not-so-much." Tales of Symphonia" says  "Maybe." Mario Super Sluggers says "Yes! We'll be sold out for months!"

Actually...Fatal Frame IV and ToS are in the "better" category.

Just because they are "better" games doesn't mean that they are going to push software. If that were the case, Zack & Wiki, Okami, and No More Heroes would have sold millions and Carnival Games/Game Party/Mario & Sonic at the Olympics wouldn't have sold nearly as much as they have.

I wasn't talking about SW sales...I was talking about how the games will be GOOD enough to buy.

Fatal Frame IV will sell as good as the PS2 versions...likely a bit better. ToS: DotNW will sell well for a Tales game and the Symphonia name is pretty popular in the West.

Just because they won't sell millions and millions means they're not worth buying? Then I guess the same can eb said for many other games on all systems because they're niche.

I wasn't talking about how much SW they'll sell though...

If SW sales weren't good, games wouldn't continue on for a long time period. Which would mean, it doesn't really matter if games were good to began with. Besides LBP owns all those games.

Really, LBP, a game of a completely different Genre altogether from any of the afore mentioned titles will own them. Apples and Oranges much? Even then, comparing games that aren't even out yet, good call.

That's my opinion. Tell me how my opinion for a game could be wrong?

Edit: Nice try though.

How about your opinion is wrong because the game isn't out yet and you haven't played it thus there is no ground for you to make an opinion.

From the 3 console makers own official fiscal reports : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111003

Tentative to reproduce some here :

FY* Sony** Nintendo Microsoft 1998 974,000,000 629,000,000 1999 1,130,000,000 645,000,000 2000 730,000,000 421,000,000 2001 -409,000,000 726,000,000 2002 623,000,000 800,000,000 -750,000,000 2003 939,000,000 560,000,000 -1,191,000,000 2004 650,000,000 316,000,000 -1,215,000,000 2005 404,000,000 777,000,000 -485,000,000 2006 75,000,000 894,000,000 -1,262,000,000 2007 -1,969,000,000 1,489,000,000 -1,892,000,000 2008 -1,265,000,000 2,480,000,000 426,000,000 2009 51,000,000 1,026,000,000 Totals 1,953,000,000 10,762,000,000 -6,369,000,000

There you have it. The PS3 ate up all the PS2 profits already and then some of the PS1 profits.

In more than 10 years, the total profit of Sony Entertainment division (which includes Playstation mostly) is barely equal to its first 2 years of profit.

wow - I didn't realise how big a hit MS took in 2006/7...only Nintendo's making big money for now - or am i reading this wrong
