Forums - Sony - Sony's shooter gambit--success or failure?

With MS attempting to mitigate one of Sony's bread and butter genres (RPGs), it appears as if Sony is attempting to mitigate MS's advantage in the shooter genre (FPS and TPS). Let us look at the past and future to see if Sony's attempt is a success or failure.

Successes: Resistance: Fall of Man--With an average score of 86 on Metacritic and hitherto 3.03 million copies sold, RFoM is an unquestionable success.

Failures: Haze--An average score of 55 on Metacritic and hitherto 0.37 million copies sold, this is an unquestionable failure.

Future: Resistance 2--A sequel to one of the most successful games on the PS3. Trailers have looked impressive and it should deliver in both sales and reviews.

Socom: Confrontation--Fairly popular franchise that has done well in sales and with critics. Should do well, but may be overshadowed by Gears 2 and Resistance 2

Killzone 2: This game seems to be highly anticipated. Sony (or the gaming public) seems to be putting a lot of pressure on this game to deliver.

I think Sony is somewhat mitigating MS's advantage in the shooter genre. The Resistance series is a nice addition to the Sony library...your thoughts on the topic?

You know, the thing is that rpgs sell, because you don't expect almost any of them to have ultra brilliant gfx, rather a good combat system and a fairly interesting storyline.

FPS's are quite a different story, anything less than better from the last best game in terms of graphics is rather not that kindly awaited or talked about. You can be sure that a very typical fps with a boring storyline, a very normal and old dated gameply style but with the latest cutting edge graphics will probably sell more than your average innovative fps with so-so gfx. Just the way of the genre i suppose.

Huh. Who would've thought that beggining anew in my real life would coincide with starting anew on vgchartz?

Any day now, the dollar will be worth less than 2 zloty......any day now.....and my life savings will be in total jepordy ;(.

Someone will find a way to question its success.

@ topic

I just wish they would show as much attention to the genres I buy Sony consoles for.

I just find it slightly ironic that last year the 306 was belittled for having nothing but shooters, but that now, with sole exception of LBP, the games you hear PS3 fans hyping up are all shooters. Resistance 2, Killzone 2, SOCOM: Confrontation, MAG, etc... My how the tables have turned.

sony its focusing on everything actually.

the lack of RPGs are only temporal i hope.

since pretty much everything is just timed.

You didn't just imply RPGs sell better than FPSs did you? And Resistance has never had the best graphics or storyline yet the old one sold really well and it's pretty safe to say the next one will be a huge success as well. On the other hand, Unreal Tournament had great graphics and failed to light the charts on fire. Gameplay is and always will be king, even in the FPS genre.

OT: Yeah, I think MS's FPS dominance has been mitigated. However, strangely enough, I believe Activision is the real culprit. COD4 is widely considered the best in the genre and it's available on both systems. So if you're a shooter fan and want the best, there's no reason to pick one system up over the other. The 360 has Gears and Halo, but the PS3 has Resistance, Killzone, Warhawk, and Socom. Again, it's not easy to pick between the two systems.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Those are the games you're choosing to hype. Sony fans have actually been hyping LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Valkyria Chronicles, God of War, Gran Turismo, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII as well.

Edit: I didn't even mention the hugely hyped PSN titles like Flower, Pixeljunk Eden, and Fat Princess.

well disgea 3, valkyere chrnicles and eternal sonata(enhanced version) will be out the door this year.

plus theres white knight to look forwrd to which hopefuly should be finished early 2009, after that there should be a few more out

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I think the reason that MS has focused on Jrps is them trying to make progress in there hardest market (Japan), same thing can be said about Sony, they are going big on FPSs since the ps3 needs to make the most progress in America, another game to put in the OPs post would be Bioshock wich is a nice addition to the PS3 only owners that have yet to play this awesome FPS.

Edit: as far as success of failure of the gambit, only time will tell, all these FPS are hyped, now they just need to deliver, and if they do, the gambit will pay off big for Sony.

Systems owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox360

Currently Playing: UNCHARTED 2 !!

Waiting for: FFXIII, GoW3, GT5, Mass Effect 2

It seems like it has been successful to me. And from a marketing standpoint it is probably smarter than going with RPG's, although I would rather have RPG's.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
