Forums - Sony - My ps3 just died on me.

For some reason my disc rotor just died on me. I can play all demo's/clips/etc that's on the harddrive, but can't play actual discs. After a billion time trying I heared the rotor starting and could play again. But that wasn't for long :/

Anyone got a quickfix for this? Or am I better of getting a new one with my guarantee?

Ps.: Yes I keep my ps3 clean/cool and safe, so I'm pretty sure it's nothing I did.

Go with the guarantee.

Copy off all your save data, and then call Sony, they may ask you to do a system restore, maybe there are some corrupted files, though it is likely a hardware issue, so the best thing to do would be to send it off to Sony, especially if it is in warantee

Get the Guarantee. I have a 3 year gaurantee on mine

Ok thanks for the quick response, guess I'll go with the guarantee.
I don't need to contact sony, Belgian law forces a 2 year guarantee on all electronic products. So I can just take it to the store I bought it with the receipt, and get a new one.

I have no clue on how to copy my save data of ps3 itself, can anyone explain? Or do I need to get my ass to google.

Do you have a MP3? Just plug it on your PS3 with the USB cable that came with your MP3 (I'm assuming it did come with something of the sort). Save datas are mostly kilobytes, so it's not going to be difficult to transfer them all.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

@ draik, if you have a USB memory stick or card, just stick that in and find the save data, press triangle and then copy.

I would advise calling Sony as there could be another way to sort out the issue

Shhh... you will bring down the wrath of the PS3 faithful for even suggesting that a PS3 can fail.

Just kidding. This seems to be the most common issue with PS3, although rare. As others have stated, as long as you have a warranty in force, it should be a simple matter to get it fixed. Can you plug in a memory card or USB harddrive, load the games one at a time, then save the games to the other media? I did this with my 360 to "back up" my saves just in case I experienced a hard drive failure. MS has 360 owners just pop the hard drive off the top of the console before sending it in, then the harddrive can just be popped on the replacement unit when it comes in. Does anyone know if Sony will allow PS3 owners to take the harddrive out before sending the unit in for repair?

Ah ok thanks, I have a USB memory stick. I'll give sony a call first as you suggested.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I appreciate it.

Good news, I got my ps3 back. Well not entirely, they've sent me a 80 gig ps3 with dual shock controller, while I used to have a 40 g sixaxis pack.

Pretty good costumer service i must say, and quick.
