Russian soldiers take prisoners in Georgia port

RUISI, Georgia - Russian soldiers took 20 Georgian troops prisoner at a key port in western Georgia on Tuesday and commandeered American Humvees awaiting shipment back to the United States after taking part in earlier U.S.-Georgian military exercises.

The move came as a small column of Russian tanks and armored vehicles left the strategic Georgian city of Gori in the first sign of a Russian pullback of troops from Georgia after a cease-fire intended to end fighting that reignited Cold War tensions. The two countries on Tuesday also exchanged prisoners captured during their brief war.

However, Russian soldiers took Georgian servicemen prisoner at a key port and commandeered U.S. Humvees. An Associated Press photographer saw Russian trucks and armored personnel carriers leaving the port with about 20 blindfolded and handcuffed men riding on them.

Port spokesman Eduard Mashevoriani said the men were Georgian soldiers.

The deputy head of Russia's general staff, Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, said Russian forces plan to remain in Poti until a local administration is formed, but did not give further details. He also justified previous seizures of Georgian soldiers as necessary to crack down on soldiers who were "out of any kind of control ... acting without command."

Russian troops last week drove Georgian forces out of South Ossetia, where Georgia on Aug. 7 launched a heavy artillery barrage. Fighting also has flared in a second Russian-backed separatist region, Abkhazia.

The short war has driven tensions between Russia and the West to some of their highest levels since the breakup of the Soviet Union, but Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has icily defended Russia's actions.

"Anyone who tries anything like that will face a crushing response," he said Monday. Later Medvedev handed out military medals to Russian soldiers involved in the fighting.

These Russia/Georgia headline really paint a one sided view, the articles haven't been as lopsided, but whenever I talk to someone they always say something to the effect of: "Oh Russia's doing this evil stuff"

The U.S., Georgia, and Russia are all handling this very poorly.

The U.S. has treaties with Russia saying that they wouldn't arm the former soviet union or extend membership into NATO, and they are.

Georgia has a treaty saying that they would not try to exert military pressure on the two regions in question.

Russia has a treaty saying that they wouldn't use military force in disputes over ethnically Russian provinces in former Soviet Union countries.

Yes, of course Russia is going to continue to move into Ossetia when Georgians are supposed to be moving out and aren't

Of course they're going to commandeer US equipment when there isn't supposed to be US equipment.

Georgia isn't going to leave Ossetia as long as they are harboring anti-Georgian pro-independence militants- when those provinces have an agreement not to endorse independence.

The US is going to supply weapons as long as Russia is expected to break their promise of not using military force in these areas.

All the parties are in the wrong, because nobody wants to give anything up.



I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

the view from the other side

georgia commiting genocide by butchering 2000 civilians in south ossetia  and that the capital of south ossetia doesnt exist because its been flattened. 

of course, independant sources say that the city exists in decent condition and under 100 people died(mainly military).

I don't see that at all from Monsieur Bubbles posts. He's just posting the news, this is a very big deal. It will effect how Georgian, Russian, and NATO deal with each other for the next quarter century.



I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

couple notes here.

The Gerogia treaty saying they would not exert military pressure was signed basically because Russia forced it's full weight on them, after Russia agitated and helped the south ossetians rise up in the first place.

Such a treaty should not be legal and enforceable.
