Forums - Sony - PS3 on the rise. Doomsayers eat crow.

I doubt very much that a 199 PS3 would be crushed by a 250 Wii.

Wii is a cheap entry into gaming, many parents feel comfortable with the Nintendo brand image ,and the wiimote and balance board has had massive appeal for some demographics. It is ,for those reasons ,selling really well.

But ,as Skeeuk says ,the PS3 and 360 games are still lightyears beyond the Wii ones.

I would say that ,once the price is right ,most of these wii users will upgrade to a 360 or PS3 just because of that. And I think the PS3 has greater capability of achieving this. Not to say the Wii will die off ,of course. But maybe some 1-2 year later down the road the sales wont be as dramatically in favour of the Wii.

As for gaming libraries ,the PS3 one is already like 3 times better than Wii.Just a quick look at gamerankings show this....and that not being too picky about the Top Wii games there wich are most of them PS2-Cube ports.

As for that prophetised massive turn of third parties to the Wii I still dont see it.At all. Most of the games announced are the usual dumbed down spin-off ,kiddie stuff ,lightgun games with the wiimote as gun ,and on rails limited games based on waggling the wiimote as if it was a sword-gun-hands-lightsaber.

We are at 2008 ,the Wii was released in 2006,we have games announced for at least end 2009 and beyond and the Wii still isnt getting the lions share of projects ...far from it.At the same time ,we see each day games announced for PS3 and 360 that some fans are just forgetting about. If the "turn to Wii" happens in 2009 the Wii will have the best projects by 2010 or 2011...at the right end of its life. And that wouldnt imply there werent still lots of projects for PS3 and 360 that would look and play way better.

I mean ....the change isnt happening. It may happen, but it isnt. Its like the touted "PS3 domination " that doesnt start ...well the "turn to Wii" hasnt even started and doesnt look as it will anytime soon.Even in a very good scenario as all the third parties supporting the Wii and releasing Wii ports of all their games ...as long as theres still PS3-360 and PC versions with vastly superior graphics ,sound ,playability ,HDD install ,online features etc the Wii wont have
ever the best catalogue of the generation.

This generation will be just different. And the best machine , understanding that with the best games ,doesnt have to be the best sold one as in previous generations.

I think that sales of the PS3 will double once it gets to the $299 price point and gets more games like LBP. Nintendo will have to respond somehow (unless they are happy with the sales and profits) so it will be interesting.

Dumb, dumb, dumb response. Because the Wii came along, which has nothing to do with Sony, the PS3 is a failure. Businesses are successful to the extent they make money. It looks like PS3 will make money this gen, though it hasn't hit the black yet. Blu-ray will end up contributing, too.

It's fanboyism to say that something fails because some other company took 'first place' in raw sales.

That may be so, but I'm pretty sure nearly everybody here considers the GameCube a failure, even though it made pretty decent profits.  Besides, even without the Wii's existence, when comparing the PS3 to its predecessor it doesn't look all that great.  If Windows Vista or its successor were/are never accepted as widely as XP, for example, people would consider it a failure, even if it does make tons of profit.

@Blue Strife: Again, your opinion on the Wii games compared to PS360 games is not the same as everybody else's.  Gamerankings doesn't mean anything when it comes to sales.  People buy what they like, and in this case, it's looking like they simply like what the Wii offers better than the 360 / PS3 does.  If graphics or the "hardcore" games were so important people would be buying more 360's, which is cheaper in some regions than the Wii.

+1, unlike with consoles, people don't feel the need to pass judgement on you by because of which beverage you choose to drink.

Water is so mainstream really, its the typical blue ocean strategy. So I can see why theres more water drunk this beverage generation than either Pepsi or Coke.

Coke and Pepsi can both DIAF. Water owns all; best tasting beverage in the world. Screw that bottled water crap too; why waste money on water that tastes like plastic, when you can get to good stuff for practically free?

Today the antiPS3 arguments are meh at best.

Yeah I agree.

From the excuses listed the only one valid to me is the High price. The rest is just brushed off as nonsense. Also I wouldn't say it's on the rise. I would many months ago with it starting selling on average of 150k a week (I think). If it were now doing maybe 200k a week i'd then say it's on the rise again but currently I think it's stagnant at best. Still better than what I heard (read) about the early months of 2007.

Let's not forget how it was the eighth deadly sin for the PS3 to cut the price of the 60GB to clear it out.

Not a peep of negativity on the internet when MS does it for the 360 Pro. No accusations about deceit or lies there.

Or how the PS3 has an awful exclusive line up when it's much better than the 360's.  Hey if I can buy it and play it on my PC without the need of a 360, it's not exclusive.

No BS, but there are only 3 games that interest me in that list. Sure there are more but they are multiplatform. This is the biggest reason why I'm not getting a Wii atm. The Wii library isn't good at all, and the future looks weak.

First off $299 is way too high being that over 75% of consoles in the previous generation were sold for $199 or less ...

Beyond that, a lot of people never seem to consider how price reductions are seen by the public in general. I was talking to someone in marketing about this the other day (related to something different) and one of the biggest problems with reducing the price of a product (in particular a product people perceived to be struggling) is that people associate price reductions to failing companies and undesireable services.

Imagine you see a car company release a $60,000 car and for the first year you hear about how insanely unpopular this car is and how much money the car company is losing. In the next year the car company decides to scale back some of the features and releases the new 'Improved' model at $40,000 and you hear that the car is selling somewhat better, but the car company as a whole continues to struggle. When the price is reduced to $30,000 how likely are you to buy that car? What about when it hits $20,000?

@Loud hot white: I doubt PS3 turns profit overall. It has already wasted more money, than what the PS2 made. And it reached more then 120M harware sales and enormous software sales.

@Blue Strife: First you pointed out that there are other reasons than the price, that sell the Wii, then you said that after the price goes down, people will start buying PS360. So, which one is it? Before you answer, keep in mind that 360 has been considerably cheaper than Wii for months now.

And yes, 199 PS3 would be crushed by Wii, since the time it would take for PS3 to reach 199, Wiis software library would be so much bigger, that there would be little to no incentive for people to buy PS3 instead of Wii.

So, why would people want to switch to PS3 or 360? Even majority of the so called hardcore stick to one console, why then the "casual" or the new audience would?

Please, quit the trolling about the games library, since we both know that PS360 have nothing but dumbed-down cheap PC-ports.

The best projects tend to hit at the end of the gen. That's nothing new. But if you really want to look what is happening with Wiis 3rd party support, look late 2006-early 2007 and compare it to late 2008. And the first party support isn't going anywhere, it's just that we don't know when which game will hit the market.

Wiis library will be the best, i don't think there's any doubt about it. People complained when NES came out, people complained when PSX came out, people complained when DS came out and people complained when Wii came out (and still are, and without any actual reason). You notice the pattern? Each started from similer situation with lowsy 3rd party support, stole the market and ended up having a great library of games, which will happen to Wii too. Besides, Wii is already in very good situation, in comparision to the others i mentioned, since it has some great 1st party titles (like SMG, TP, MKW, FE, Brawl, Wii Fit, etc) out and many are still left. 3rd parties are moving to Wii, while some already have put top-notch titles on it, and with its monster software sales, it's no wonder. Wii has proven to be a viable platform for publishers and most of all, very profitable.

As what it comes to PC/PS3/360 multiplats, the argument is kind of moot, because you could do a PC/Wii multiplat for the same price and reach even bigger audience.

There's a few assumption here I will contest.

First that the Wii software library will be so much bigger than the PS3 that there will be no incentive for anyone to buy a PS3.

There's a point where software library size really doesn't matter. As long as a console has 80+ good games it's worth buying, who cares if the others has 500, you will never have the time to play them. Not mentionning the fact that the Wii still face an uphill battle to have the same numbers of good titles as the others consoles. It may have a few very good games but overall it has less decent games than the competition ( lets say with a metacritic over 75 for example).

What you're saying is the same as saying I won't shop at my local bookstore because it only has 10 000 titles, I only buy stuff on Amazon because they have 10 time the choice.... Good luck reading every single book on sale at Amazon.......

As for your PC/Wii argument last I checked the Wii strenght was its controls which are not available on the PC, so how you do titles that work well on both platforms ???

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
