If the marketshare numbers are to be believed, it shows that there does not seem to be a lot of difference caused by PS2 ownership. The slight difference is probably not statistically significant.

In other words, PS2 ownership is NOT a predictor to PS3 ownership.

PS -- I own a PS2 (and an Xbox and GC) and a Wii (so far).

Almost all Ps3 owners were Ps2 owners. So I would say it is a predictor in a way.

I really want to know how they got their figures. I have an odd feeling that it is a bit high since using VGC's numbers there are around 35 million current gen consoles in the USA and many PS3/360/Wii owners are new to console gaming these figures might not connect well looking at the general purchasers.

Many people are buying Wiis because the novelty and they are cheap and come with the best game to showcase the wiimote.

But thats hardly a upgrading. The novelty wears off ,the wii ends in some box in the wardrobe and thats all.Its a console of transit for the real gamers ,although the casuals can keep entertained with it for longer amounts of time.

Very interesting.  So it looks like as people upgrade their PS2, the Wii and 360 are the primary choices (by about 2x).  I represent that statistic exactly because I have a PS2, a Wii and a 360.

My Wii gets most of the game playing though.  It has such good games.  The 360 is more of a novelty.

Yes, but it also shows that almost all Ps3 owners, also owned a Ps2. The Ps3 has, in the US, not gotten any GC/XB owners to change.

If the novelty rapidly wears off, and it ends up in some box in a wardrobe for a large portion of owners, why does it sell so much more software than the PS3?

And it sells more SW than the PS3...why then?

Thay novelty crap needs to go. Sure, it's extremely popular, but everyone buys it for SW, not just so they can say they have it. It's still sold out and you're expecting people to wait in line or whatever to say they have it?

Well, lets see here more consumers equals more sw...

And you're enforcing my point. If more consumers = more SW then success.

You missed the point, your asking why it sells more sw then ps3? I answered that...It's like asking what sells more Dvd movies or Blue-Rar movies? The answer is quite obvious. I never tried to prove you wrong, rather that its a ridiculous question to ask is been why I answered with, well, lets see here... If you look closely at what he said in his second sentence you would have known that his addressing it on his point of view, not everyones.

You missed the point though. Diomedes said that everybody plays their wii for a short period of time then it wears off. That means nobody would be buying games, and the wii wouldn't be selling so much software.

Well, I think you missed Soriku's point ...

Diomedes1976 has claimed (on several occasions) that a large percentage of Wii owners do not actually play the Wii systems they bought, and that they're only collecting dust; I don't remember if it was him, but in the past there have also been countless posters who then claimed that the people who do use their Wiis are only playing Wii Sports.

If there is a large number of Wii owners who don't play Wii games then the userbase advantage of the Wii shouldn't translate into a software sales advantage; for the most part the Wii sells a similar ammount of software per system to the PS3/XBox 360 which means that the ratio of Wii owners who bought their Wii as a 'Novelty' is similar to the ratio of PS3/XBox 360 owners who bought their system as a 'Novelty'.
