Forums - Microsoft - Would Microsoft have crushed Sony if the Xbox 360 had had HD DVD built in?

Honestly, I don't think Microsoft would have crushed Sony with HD-DVD. This isn't to say that HD-DVD would still have beaten Blu-Ray -it might very well have done so- but by a much smaller margin, and only after far longer.

As it is, DVD will likely beat Blu-Ray. After a protracted format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, however, DVD would most certainly have beaten both.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

  1. The first HD DVD players came to market on March 31, 2006. The 360's launched definitely would've been delayed, probably until sometime around May '06.  This would've cut the 360's lead time substantially, making more people wait for the ps3 instead of jumping on the 360's bandwagon early.

  2. The high price of the 360 would've also caused people to wait for ps3s, even after Sony announced it's $599 USD price tag at E306.

  3. Many of the 360's defacto exclusives (like Dead Rising) would've probably gone multiplat, with the ps3 releasing only ~six months later.

The Xbox didn't have the brand recognition to survive a launch price of $599.  Only Sony could've survived that, and they BARELY survived, suffering through absolutely horrible sales for most of 2007.  The Xbox would've gone the way of the 3DO.

Nope. Wouldn't have happened. Sony makes a ridculous # of movies a year with Columbia Tristar also they recently purchased MGM-for James Bond of course and they have been very chummy with Disney lately. (Kingdom Hearts movie?) I doubt that Universal and Paramount supporting HDDVD would have been enough.

No.....

hellz no!!!! thers no possible way, that the 360even had a chance.
if it had hddvd and opened at the same price:

1st of all it would have come out around the same time as thePS3.
2nd of all microsoft would have lost a lot of money.(not that they need it)

so no, 360 would not be winning. in fact,PS3 would be ahead.

Would the Sega Master System have defeated the Nintendo Entertainment System if it'd included a VCR? Of course not. For all the corporate hype surrounding it, multi-functionality in media devices is not a valued or selling feature to the vast majority of consumers.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

sony only had to release the ps3 in europe to survive.

and gt5 is still not out :(

Man... u have to be M$ biggest lap-boy, how brow is your nose again?

I kinder wished they did though. Think about it, then M$ would have sold a lot less due to the much higer price tag. Now all we need is another stupid... what if thread, *If the PS3 launched at the same time as the 360, would SONY have "CRUSHED" M$?- manup and answer that one!
