Forums - Gaming - I Hate To Say It, but the PS3 Might Not Get a Price Cut (My Opinion Inside)

The 125 dollar cost is for the WHOLE blue Ray Drive. The cost reduction is significant though since the Diode went from around 65 or so to 8 dollars.

Only europe removed the EE as far as I know and I haven't heard about the 32 Megs of RAM. The Cell i the PS3 as far as I know is still only 90mm.

I seriously doubt the cost of the Whole BluRay Drive was $125...seeing as BluRay drives were costing $1000 to the general public.

I thought it was common knowledge that the PS3 would have been at least $300 less to produce if it didn't incorporate a BluRay Drive in it.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Ssj: The GS is still there, they removed only emotion engine.

Davygee: If i recall, i saw an ad at newspaper last fall, which advertised rewritable BD-drive for PC for 650 euros. So comparing electronics prices between EU and US (as how they usually are), price in the US would be 600$, without taxes.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

hey, I think 125$ is about the drive for ur PC
it is cheaper than the drive u get for ur saloon 1000$
just what I think

Time to Work !

There is more to a player than just the drive. There are decoder chips and there are even CPUs in all players.  Plus those systems were built for profit. Blue laser devices have to have finer calibration they can not shake as much the disc can not able as much and the players require more memory for buffers than DVDs. there are more filters and decoders for different codecs both auido and video and when the PS3 came out you could get a Blu ray player for 800 if you shopped enough.

The process is very slow for making new games. I think people sometimes forget how long it takes to make a video game these days.

Another thing people are ignoring is that component costs are only one factor in pricing. R&D and Marketing also contribute to the price and in the case of the PS3 are fairly significant.

Heck, that might not affect anything because the PS3 is still $600 and sells like crap compared to Blu-Ray.

Uh where did you get this number? Because last time I checked the PS3 is over 1.5 million in North America while stand alone Blu Ray players are just under 100k so the PS3 is selling a lot better than Blu-Ray amigo.

Also intersting fact: stand alone HD DVD players are over 100k while the 360 HD DVD player is at like 200 k meaning it's selling better than the stand alone players.

 Yep, this is my understanding as well. I think Blu-Ray has defeated HD-DVD at this point, and it has the PS3 to thank for that success almost entirely.

If they have so many teams, why so few games?

Few games?

Let's look at the Sony games in development right now for the PS3 only (1st and 2nd party):

Guerilla is developing Killzone 2

Team Ico is developing an unnamed PSN game to be revealed at TGS or E3.

Sony Santa Monica is early in God of War 3 development.

SOE is making The Agency that should have a big E3 showing.

Polyphony is working on Gran Turismo 5.

Insomniac are making Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and have stated that they will be working on Resistance Fall of Man 2 after that.

Naughty Dog is making Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and has a Jak and Daxter: Lost Frontier game listed for 2008.

Sony Liverpool Sutudios is making Wipeout HD (downloadable) and the next real Wipeout sequel.

Zipper is making the next real Socom sequel (not the downloadable one).

Slant Six Games is making Socom Confrontation (Downloadable MP game).

Factor 5 is almost done with Lair.

Sony Japan is gonna release Folklore in the US and Europe this year and is finishing Hot Shots Golf 5 and is probably going to show the PS3 Locoroco soon.

Quantic Dream is making Heavy Rain.

Ninja Theory is almost done with Heavenly Sword.

Sony London Studios is working on The Getaway and the PS3 Singstar.

Sony San Diego is making NBA 08.

Incognito is finishing up Warhawk and is reportedly working on a Twisted Metal next gen game.

SCE also finishing Eye of Judgment.

SCEA making High Velocity Bowling.

Media Molecule is making LittleBigPlanet.

Level 5 is making White Knight Story.

Sucker Punch Productions has an unnamed project in the works (maybe Sly Cooper 4).

(Edit) forgot to mention the following games: Eight Days (SCEA) and Eyedentify (SCE) that haven't been shown in a while and should have new info on them E3 or TGS.

That's 22 Groups working on 31 PS3 exclusive 1st and 2nd party games off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others that haven't been revealed yet or that I forgot to mention.

That's really no impressive considering how far spaced out they're going to be and how poorly most will probably sell given the PS3's bad market saturation. Again another case of a Sony Fanboy boasting up every little worthless titles that won't make plop much ales a splash.

End of 2007 Predictions:

Wii =18m

360=14m

PS3=7m

DS=64m

PSP=30m

Again another case of a Sony Fanboy boasting up the smallest of things. I mean wow, High Velocity Bowling, there's a killer app. You show em Sony.

You said there are no games I pointed out all the games that are coming out on PS3 from Sony. Yes of course a downloadable game like High Velocity Bowling is what PS3's hopes are pinned on completely. Douche.

All those games come out in the next two years. Now that you made it abundantly clear that you have no idea how many Sony games are in the works, you move to attack games that you know nothing about and mock a downloadable game as not a big seller lol quite the sad display Gballzack.

Another case of someone pointing out the BS in someone else's claim of few games coming out from Sony and 2nd parties. I suppose I should try to cater the list of games to your tastes? That would be quite impossible when you are here to bash anything and everything related to this system.

Also, expect to add a lot more games to that list at E3 and TGS this year.

Stfu and accept that you were talking out of your ass when asking: 'why so few games?'

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

As others have pointed out, it doesn't matter how much they can produce ps3's for today, because there are still ps3's in the channel from shipments made back in march or earlier. All those ps3's made at a higher price point have been increasing in cost to sony because they haven't been sold, and dropping the price now just increases their cost even further.

If they made a ps3 for a cost of $800 back in mark (theoretically, I have no idea the actual cost) and they expected it to sell for $600 then they were only losing $200 on it (still pretty extreme if you ask me). If they cut the cost now, that PS3 will still have cost them $800 to make, even if they can make them for $600 now, and on top of that, those older ps3's have been costing them extra money for storage at warehouses or whatever, the cost of taking up room someplace. I'm sure they haven't convinced stores to buy all those ps3's and store them at their own cost for 3 months.

Anyway, any price cut they make would have to include those factors as well, not just the cost they can produce a PS3 at today. Based on the numbers released by Sony at the end of march and the estimates for sellthrough on this site, Sony has somewhere between 1.5-2 million consoles produced way back then at a much higher cost than they can make them today.

Personally, I think they are between a rock and hardplace. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. No matter what they do, someone will be pissed about it, either share holders about the increased losses, or the gamers and developers because there was no price cut. I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions =).
