Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sega head: Wii is “great opportunity for hitting hardcore gamers”

@Disolitude: Why should they focus on controller innovation, when people want gameplay innovation (not necessarily innovation, but good gameplay)? And another thing, graphical innovations can be done on Wii as well. It's not a matter of specs. Besides, as long as the developers try to up the specs they manage to get out of the consoles, we are not going to see any innovations.

It's not going to take long before PC:s are out of reach for consoles and since we included PC into discussion, why not making Wii/PC titles? Or Wii/PS3/360/PC? With Wii as the leading platform, porting would be somewhat easy, since there wouldn't be problems in fitting the game specswise for the other platforms. Slight graphical update and since the vast majority of PS360 games already are upscaled from lower resolutions, there wouldn't be problems with the resolution either. A minor graphical innovation could even bring the graphics more scalable.

I hear what you are saying in that last paragraph but I'm not sure things are that close in the graphical spectrum. Wii may look comparable on a CRT tv but I'm playing my wii on a 58 inch 1080p plasma and the difference between visuals of ps360 and Wii is quite substantial. Upscalling the resolution and adding a polygon here and there would not achieve such a difference.

Neverthless I agree that gameplay inovations are what any console needs to satisfy the hardcore gamers. Look at Braid on the 360...its a sidescroller but it will be considered a "hardcore" title due to its difficult nature and innovations. And that game could be done on a sega saturn visually. So yes, count me in for the people that would support gameplay innovations on the wii...despite the visuals.

Around the Network

There right. There's obviously a hardcore crowd on wii, and its growing. Look how many hardcore players got wii for mario, zelda, metroid, smash, RE games, and will get it for madworld, the conduit, and fatal frame.

Support good third party games on wii. Buy games like house of the dead overkill, de blob, madworld, the conduit and boom blox.

@Disolitude: I didn't mean that they would be upscaled from 480p, but maybe seemingly higher resolutions, like CoD4 was, what 600p? But then again, with Wiis level of detail, or slightly higher, PS360 could run games easily in 1080p without drops in framerate, so the "Wii first" model wouldn't be just for nothing. It all depends what kind of developement tools the dev is using (for example, the Crystal Tools -model seems promising).

Good gameplay or gameplay innovation isn't exclusive to anyone, as we speak every platform has a number of games with great gameplay, it's just the problem of the majority of devs pushing the hardware instead of the game itself.
