Forums - Gaming - What do you think Midway's fate will be?

I hope Midway somehow hangs in there and gets things back on track. They made too many fun games in the past and I want them to pull through. I think they will make it out of the hole eventually, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tanked, were bought out, or merged with another company.

Same fate as Atari. Continue to fall until a larger company picks them up, disbands them and absorbs their properties. Alright that was more the way of Acclaim but you get my point.

They are making a new Gauntlet for the DS, it has voice chat and all the good stuff like online.

Whats a midway? Is it something you stand on while it moves fast, because I think you mean segway.

Midway is like Sega to me, if I see the name I ignore the product.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

err... they have UT3 making money for them... UT3 is selling pretty well on Steam.

Really? How many downloads have Unreal Tournament 3 had over Steam?

no idea, but it and the complete UT pack was in the top 10 downloads for a long time.

If you have no point of reference, then how do you know it's been selling well?

We're talking about a company that is in the midst of cutting jobs and you are trying to give the impression that they are doing fine based on a game they published that bombed on consoles and is supposedly making great sales on the PC with no figures to show for it?

Midway looked as if they had hit the right mix of console releases with PsiOps, Suffering, NBA Ballers, Area 51, Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks on during the PS2/XBX/NGC era. But they are yet to find their stride in the next gen era, a string of high profile under performers such as Blacksite : Area 51, Stranglehold, Hour Of Victory, Blitz The League, Unreal Tournament 3 etc ..
My advice to them Dish out sequels for proven titles like Suffering, Psi-Ops, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks etc ..
Ready 2 Rumble for the Wii is a no brainer, why hasn't this game been announced yet.
A lot of their old franchises can be retrofitted for the Wii, Suffering and Psi-Ops would be amazing with Wii Controls.
Considering that They have invested the most on PS360 titles and Wii titles seems to be providing most of their revenues, they should reassess their priorities.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

At least they didn't do like Atari/Interplay and sell off all their IP. Now those idiots have gotten nothing to milk so they can fund new IPs.

Midway's interim CEO is cleaning house for whoever the next CEO will be. I think he's doing a good job. They had several future big flops that he cut. I don't know if he can sense a hit, but he can definitely smell a stinker.

By the way they have seen some losses, but still have 73 million in cash. They saw a lot of losses in their operations, but this is negated slightly each quarter by other income.

They still have a long way to go, but next Q will show tremendous cuts in spending and upticks on several releases that they have planned using existing technology.

If Matt Booty is as good at spotting talent and quality as he is at strict fiscal management or they get someone who is, then Midway's solid organization will set them up for a bright future.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Midway lacks the innovative forethought to work their way out of this predicament. They will do what every expired developer has done. They will return to the river that has run dry, and will try to eek out a living. There comes a time when you have to abandon the familiar and make a move to fresh territories. Waiting too long to do so is a death sentence, because by the time panic sets in you no longer have the resources to make bold moves.

What Midway needs to do is create new intellectual properties, and retire their tried properties. They need to move towards new territories in gaming. When you are not top dog, and you do not have the resources it is suicide to try and do what the other guy is doing.

What Midway needs to do is move away from fighters, shooters, and racers. They need to find a genre unpopulated that still has potential for hardcore appeal. Plus they need a genre that doesn't deplete coffers. While some may say games for Live and its like. The reality is that a large developer cannot possibly survive on that alone. Low cost yes but also low return. That is like emptying a sinking boat with a tea cup. They need something revolutionary and fresh that can bring in a good chunk of cash.

To me I think Midway would do well with a space shooter. There just are not a lot of games in the genre. Which means little competition, the nature of the genre means low development costs, and the genre has some real success stories. That is what they need a space shooter with up to sixteen player online support. There is good money to be made there.

Other good genres for Midway would be social interaction games, exploration games, environment simulators, and collection games. All of which are cheap to produce, but are so under represented in the market that when they do show up they rake in the cash. Look at titles like Animal Crossing, Endless Ocean, Myst, and Pokemon. All have low overhead, but massive profit potential.

Midway needs to be looking to these genres for salvation, because if they keep trying to compete with the big boys in the crowded genres they are going to eventually be crushed out of the market.
