Forums - Gaming - Sequals: I love them

Im sorry but i have heard this over and over again that no one is making new games just sequals. All sequels are not giving the gamer something new or interesting and gaming is going to Hell because of them.

Well im tired of it and that and thats next true. As i recall the BIGGEST most Innovative games were all sequels. These games set the standard for ALL "new" titles and other sequals. without sequels the gaming industry would suck.

Mario 64. Still to this day the one and only platformer all great platformers are based on. With out this SEQUEL games like jak and daxter, Ratchet and clank, Banjo, donkey kong, Would NEVER have been so awesome. most of these games even used the same way to collect things lol.

Halo 2. This game (more or less) set the standard for how FPS should be online on a console. Any FPS to come out after it was rated based on this SEQUEL. It had clans, ranks and other things that where not standard on any Console shooter. (remeber console)

Final Fantasy 7 Everyone knows this game is the RPG game to beat. Not even SE can recreate its hype. No RPG before it was as Hyped and some may say even till this day. Without this SEQUEL many of us RPGers would prolly of never even gotten into these games. Not to metion Most RPGs try to copy this game. (lost odd)

Grand Turismo 3 This is prolly the best in the series. Countless cars, tracks, etc. One of the highest selling gmes of all time. One of the first to take cars from fake crappy racers to real beast that act like the real thing. Without this SEQUEL There would be no Forza or other REAL racing sims.

Grand theft Auto 3 Must i even talk about this SEQUEL? ok ill make this one short... How many open world games have you played in the last 8 years? If its more then 5 you should thank GTA3. (saints row, AC etc)

edit: Street fighter 2- i dont no why i 4got about this. This is the fighting game every single other fighting game is based off of. thats a fact. (i will have to list all fighting games lol)

i can name lots more like Zelda 64, Perfect dark, etc but i think we all get the point.

My point of this thread is not to say "OMG i want all sequals no new stuff" but to inform people that all new games are not innovative and that all sequals are not trash and boring. I think (my opinon) that MOST innovation comes form sequels and not from new titles. Some of the biggest staples in RPGS, Racing, FPS, etc are from sequels.

So as i love new ideas and games i also love sequels so bring them on!!!

Discuss.

Edit: sorry about the mispelling i will correct as i check in im at work and typed really fast XD. i cant correct the title but you know what i mean.

Ugh Mario 64, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy 7, and Grand Theft Auto 3 aren't sequels(notice the way I spelled it). GT3 and GTA 3 are the 3rd in the series, Mario 64 is more difficult to place considering there is no direct storyline or numbering to go off, but definitely not a sequel. That would Super Mario Bros 2. And FF7 is the 7th in the series.

I understand what your trying to say but other than Halo 2 none of those are sequels. Either games further along in that series or whatever.

Since I started the anti sequel thread I will be glad to chime in.  I dont think all they make is sequels there have been plenty of new games coming.  I think you saying without sequels the gaming indiustry would suck was a little over the top.

Yes but what about Halo3? ot GTA4, Final Fantasy whatever number they are up to?  Yes there have been some very good sequels but MOST (not all) are just a few tweaks and out it comes with little innovation.

Dont get me wrong I am buying a few sequels but when is it enough final fantasy 65?  Halo 80?

I will be buying Fable 2, GOW2, and COD5 but there has to be an end

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

hmmmmmm. so mario 64 is a completely new IP? i thought i did play a mario before the Nintendo 64.... hmmm guess not.

I disagree with you that mario 64 is not a sequal to a SNES mario. (hence the game with the same name and characters). Its not a direct sequal but its its sequal.

Same with all the other games

Name a brand new game that really changed things? i cant think of many. wii anything is just new controls but there really isnt anything "new" there that i have not seen before.

Well I disagree with how you've represented GT3, you act as though GT and GT2 weren't sims. The original was much more ground breaking than any of the others.

But that point out of the way, Gran Turismo is a good example because every game has been better than the last (and yes that includes GT4). It's well known that gaming is an unusual medium in that sequels are often better than the previous iteration, and for that reason I think sequels are essential.

New IPs are very rarely as fun to play as new instalments of a franchise you already know and love. This is partly because developers have the opportunity to address the problems that people found with the previous game, but mostly it's a matter of sentiment.

Resistance is a very good example of this. The original wasn't an earth-shattering game that took people by storm but it was a solid game that large numbers of people enjoyed playing and for a decent length of time. And it's their positive memory of this that has so many people excited about R2 and which will mean that they will enjoy R2 all the more (unless the developers make a huge error somewhere, which is looking unlikely).

Most of my favourite games are sequels, and the games I always most hotly anticipate are new iterations of series I love.

HA my point excatly!!!!

Gears or war - a FPS in a different view. Absolutely nuthin new in this game that has not been done before. (kill switch had the cover system on ps2)

Uncharted- a platforming shooter Absolutely nuthin new in this game that has not been done before. (ratchet, Jak. etc)

Mass effect is a bioware game. As awesome as it was it played just like 3 of the games they made before it.

No innvation in any of the games you listed above. (i own all these games and like them but they have new characters in a new setting but the gameplay is not new)

thats my point that new games arent as needed for innvation as people think.

You can use GT but i think it was really perfected in GT3. With the graphics and realism the ps2 gave it was really the best and looked like a real car. i mean the ps1 games did have that look. (thats what i think)

and yea the games i metioned in OP were earth shattering RFOM and part 2 wont be. (ima huge fan of them but they are not Mario 64 lol. its been done before)
