Forums - PC Discussion - AMD's new technology: Lighstage. What consoles will be doing in a decade?

This is a HUGE leap.  This won't be economically viable for at least a decade on even PC, but man, wow.  This looks better than any current CG.

Also check out the Ruby demo here.  This is an absolutely incredible technology, and a gigantic leap above anything developers are doing now.

Edit: This is a couple months old, but it got basically no coverage here, so I'm bringing it up lol.

Naz, I think there's a news article made on this already. But absolutely amazing.

Yeah, the news article is for the update to it. But I figured it deserved a forum discussion as well.

News article here.

In that case, I'm fully looking forward to this tech. Hopefully we will have good enough PCs within 5 to 10 years. Then again this is AMD tech so maybe they will start churning out CPUs and GPUs to support this even sooner.

As a future developer, I have a few words after seeing this: yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that does look good. This could be used for more than just games as well. It could be used for medical purposes as well. If this technology is used for video games in the future, graphics as a whole will probably be unable to surpass what was just shown. So here's a few questions...

"How can this affect games that rely on very high graphical details and such in the LONG run?"

"Right now, do you think it was wise for Nintendo to go the other route (controls) instead of pushing visuals?"

And finally...

"If this technology is used in video games (whenever that will be), how much could it cost to the console maker (producing the chips to support this), the software developers (investing in dev kits and such) and more importantly, us consumers?"

Obviously with this technology, graphics won't be able to get better than that.

Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)

Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U

Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

It's awesome!

I love how they made the city.

but.. something's bothering me like they will need real actors/amateur actors for making a game. Not only do they need to fit the role, they have to look good.

Well this is all still digital, people's faces can still be changed if needed so we wouldn't need any actual actors and models.

I thought Nintendo just recently wanted a patent filed for some holographic stuff. I think by the time this AMD is put into use (if it ever is), it won't be an actual threat to any of the existing game giants (Ninty,MS, or Sony).
