Forums - Gaming - 2d to 3d Transition: The Best and Worst of

Well there have been more weak FF games than strong ones since going 3D so I guess that's a good example.

DK64 was pretty bad.

As for good ones. Mega Man Legends is amazing. Mario 64 obviously. Harvest Moon 64 would be the best Harvest Moon game. Rayman 2 was a great game also.

worst: sonic for the most part

Shame too. The first Bubsy is a classic that I still play today.  Each sequel got exponentially worse

BEST: METAL GEAR SOLID

WORST: PAC-MAN

I think the transition from 2D to 3D was inevitable since Nintendo experimented with it on the Snes. But I must say that a lot of companies closed their doors because their IPs did not make a successful jump into the 3D realm. And even some of the ones that did make a successful attempt at 3D found the cost of development to be a lot more expensive and could not continue to develop games and closed their doors.

That's the sad part about the transition.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

yeah got a bit carried away with that statement
But its true, Super Metroid far surpasses any of the 3-d Metroids, and i can say that with considerable conviction. Contradict me if you feel like doing it

Yeah. In your opinion.

Castlevania started off poorly but Lament of Innocence was awesome.

I for one loved DK64 and bomberman64's multiplayer.  Honestly I hope at some point 3D DK makes a return.

Sonic and Mortal Kombat are probably the biggest standouts for bad 3D transitions.  It's all an acquired taste really though.

Best: Zelda, MGS, PoP, GTA, Duke Nukem

Worst: Sam & Max new adventures / Tales of Monkey Island

Adventure games suffered the most from the 2D to 3D transition, pretty killed off the entire genre for a while.
