How are video game budgets high? They're actually very low, blockbuster movies tend to cost several hundred million for a 2 hour production, a 20 hour game costs a fraction of that.

By that logic a piece of gum that costs 1 million dollars to make has a cheap budget.

How is that the same? Movies and games are both visual MEDIA that tell stories through digital visual representation.

So if the piece of gum comes with a VCR with a hastily drawn together cartoon that's better?

Ok, a piece of gum that costs 1 million with a cartoon voiced and animated by one guy.

Unles consumers start getting into HD gaming in droves then the cost of technology to make these HD games wont go down fast. I'm not sure about fast enough, I sure hope they can get cost of development down to where they can venture on a huge FFXII production for around 20 million instead of 100+

When a developer can reuse artistic assets from one game to another (like a sports game or a WWII shooter) costs should scale down nicely through out the generation ... Unfortunately, if a developer produces games with different art styles or different environments  then they will be unable to take advantage of cost savings from this.

In general, the industry just has to grow to the level where when someone says "I don't play videogames" it seems as strange as someone saying "I don't watch movies" or "I don't listen to music" in order to support development costs as large (or larger than) current HD games.

@Groucho

Saw this up on an earlier thread - this is from Factor 5, and I'd guess Wii games' costs are pretty close to GC games.

Which supports my position of a AAA Wii budget likely being somewhere between $5-10 million USD (25-50% as claimed by many publishers), not less than $1 million (lol).  Thank you for posting that chart.

That's a really bad comparison, man. Ratchet + Clank Future sold a little over a million copies (1.27) while Mario Galaxy sold almost 7. I could see them having similar dev. budgets, but the Mario game gave back a 5 fold higher profit. A better question is asking if Ratchet + Clank cost less to make than Carnival Games, which sold 1.89 Million copies so far. And it took six months to develop. http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/08/24/carnival-games-wii-developer-this-is-not-a-mini-game-collection/

Um...  So you're saying that, since SMG made much more money (gross) than the latest R&C (gross)... that Nintendo knew this ahead of time and thus invested more in it than a typical AAA platformer title, and thus the comparison is bad?

There are a lot of publishers who would *love* to live on your planet. =)

Sports games generally don't have (or need) stories. With a bit of thought, you'll notice that many other game genres don't need them either. Directly comparing films with games is a red herring.

It's their own fault that they make expensive HD games.....

Since companies that make good games seem to be profitable this seems to be as good an approach as any. Companies that develop quite a bit for the Wii like Sega didn't make any money either. (I really hope that all of these shovelware titles flying around push the numbers of failed games up quite a bit.)

Sega didn't make money?  That can't be right after selling over 5 million copies of Mario & Sonic and the Sonic game on Wii selling over a million.  If what you say is correct then they probably lost all the money they made from the Wii developing games on PS360

Somebody need to tell Activision to that developing for the Wii doesn't make money. Those record profits are not supposed to happen.
