Forums - Gaming - 4GB RAM in 7th Gen Consoles...

Does this sound crazy??? I really don't think it is considering how fast the need for space grows these days.

5th Gen:

N64: 4MB of Total Ram

PS1: MainRam - 2MB

        VideoRam - 1MB

        SoundRam - 512KB

Sega Saturn: 4.5MB total Ram

6th Gen:

PS2: 32MB - 8x the N64 from 5th gen...

XBOX: 64MB - 16x the N64 from 5th gen...

GC: 43MB - 10.75x the N64 from last gen...

7th Gen:

PS3: 512MB Total RAM - 8x the most in the 6th Gen...

X360:       ""                -             ""

I did all this because I was bored, but I found it interesting...

512 X 8 [am using the minimum multiplier in that data above] = 4096 - 4GB...

What do you guys think? DISCUSS!!!

I don't know aobut the future but Saturn had 4.5 megs of ram.

2 megs for system ram
1.5 megs for video
0.5 megs for cd buffer
0.5 megs sound ram

i think itll be higher believe it or not, i have a feeling sony's gonna stretch out this gen as long as they possibly can

2gb of fast ram is more likely. Ram doesn't scale with process shrinks to the same extent that CPUs do.

Tease.

Since I don't think we will see a fourth PlayStation till about 2011 I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Around the Network

Since they are dedicated machines they generally need far less RAM than a computer. I figure that the next generation will be either 1.5GB (1GB system ram and 512MB video) or a 2GB shared memory deal. One of the main drivers of this will be the need for Microsoft and Sony to come in at lower price points at the start this time.

I give this thread a 9.6.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

You forgot the Dreamcast -_-

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

2 GB would be most likely. Procrab and Squilliam nailed the reasons.

Dreamcast - 26MB

16 MB main RAM
8 MB video RAM
2 MB sound RAM

3DO - 3.04 Megs

2MB Main RAM
1 MB Vid RAM
32K sound RAM

One must realize that systems that are not CD/DVD based work differently since not as much ram is needed. If the next gen is not bluray but is something like Flash memory or old school cartrige... I don't think more than 512 of ram will be necessary.

Compare Neo Geo to Neo Geo CD. Both ran the exact same games

Neo Geo - 134K RAM + cartrige being played

64KB 68000 processor
2KB sound
Video RAM: 68KB

Neo Geo CD - 7.7 MB

Program Memory: 2 MB
Graphics Memory: 4 MB
Sound Sample Memory: 1 MB
Z80 Program Memory: 64 kB
VRAM: 512Kb
Fix Layer Memory: 128 KB
