Forums - Sales - What will sell more in the 2008 holiday season--Galaxy or Halo 3 edition

gears of war 2 and call of duty 5 and other shooters will take sales away from halo 3 it will still sell really well, SMG has no competition on wii, if you want platforming on wii you have to have SMG no other game comes close imo, i think SMG will sell little more

I agree and disagree.  I definitely think Shooters have an impact on eachother's sales, and this is something to be taken in to account more than other platformers taking Mario's sales.  However, I believe most of the market that wil purchase the specific shooters you mentioned this season will have either already purchased or decided against Halo.  Most of Halo's boost this holiday season will come from new console owners, imo.

Both games will have been out for over a year, but both will undoubtably see boosts to their sales over the the end of this year.

For reference, both Galaxy and Halo 3 have maintained sales enough to be in the top 100 worldwide every week since release, and for the last reported week, their sales were 24k and 20k respectively.

Galaxy sold 31k last week, not 24k.

whoops!  Either the numbers were just adjusted, or I must've just looked at the wrong data.  Anyway its fixd now.

Depends if Halo 3 gets a price cut. (Galaxy sure won't get one)

Halo is still selling well too--what makes you think it could get one?

Well that might be a factor in it not getting a price cut, but games like that do get cuts anyway sometimes to help Christmas sales.... Nintendo meanwhile are not one to cut prices so soon though, Galaxy will probably not get a price cut (not from Nintendo, it will get store offers) for at least another year.

why do people buy halo? it sucks and gets boring very fast. besisdes everone will be to buy playing resistance 2 to care about christmas

If the 360 price cut helps push sales in the Americas, Halo 3 has a chance to sell better. Still, I don't think it will. This holiday season, the 360 will have lots of new titles (Gears 2, Fable 2, Saint's Row 2, Left 4 Dead, Tomb Raider, etc.). These games will all sell well and provide a lot of competition for Halo 3.

Exclusively, the Wii doesn't have that many games lined up for the rest of the year. Most of the Wii's big hits this holiday season will be either multiplatform third party games (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Guitar Hero, various sports games) or first party games from 2007 or early 2008 (Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Galaxy, Brawl, Wii Play). Consumers looking for hit Nintendo games will be catching up on older titles they missed, and Super Mario Galaxy will be getting plenty of shelf space.

Not only that, but we're looking at what could be record breaking Wii sales numbers due to alleviated supply and increased demand due to the release of several hit titles. While 360 hardware sales will definitely be strong, Wii sales will be even stronger. I would give the battle to Super Mario Galaxy, although Halo 3 will win in the long end due to its long term selling capacity. Either way, it will be close.

I agree, Super Mario Galaxy should be able to edge out Halo 3. SMG is beating it by 10k a week and the sales of the Wii this holiday season will also help it out. But they will both see great boosts though.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!

I think Galaxy will outsell Halo 3 by more than 100K during the holidays, especially if Nintendo manages to sell additional Wiis.  This week was a bad week of Galaxy because so few Wiis were sold in the US.  But Galaxy often sells better, and it will likely do gangbusters during the holiday season.

I own and play both a fair bit.  Galaxy is a far better game than Halo 3.  They don't even belong in the same range.

Halo, because Halo has the word Halo in it.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Mario is a holiday title. It will see huge boosts this holiday. While Halo might get the backseat to Gears of War 2 in sales. Might be close but I see Galaxy topping Halo 3 but could be pretty close.

I say Galaxy
