Forums - Gaming - Okami: What would've happened if it had been a Wii launch title?

Personally, I think it would have sold much better than it currently has.

1. It was originally released on the ps2 with little to no marketing amongst a plethora of other titles.  Given it's odd art style, it was ultimately ignored by 99.9% of ps2 owners.

2. It was re-released on the Wii with no improvements whatsoever outside of the controls, and it was released after TP, SMG, MP3, SSBB, and Mario Kart Wii, and thus was once again ignored by the populous at large.

3.  Had it been a Wii launch title, it would've been the only really good "core" title for the Wii aside from TP for almost an entire year (though some might complain about two very similar games releasing in such close proximity to each other), and it probably would've sold pretty well  as a result.  Also, Clover would've had an extra seven months to optimize the game for the Wii, improving not just the controls but also the visuals, giving the game a nice extra coat of paint over and above what it had already recieved.  This version would've been superior to either version currently released, and the game was practically destined for the Wii in the first place, as shown by the Wii port's excellent controls.

If this game had been a Wii launch title, it would've done much better than it did on the ps2, and later on the Wii.  For all we know, Clover might still be around and an Okami 2 could be in the works.

If only Capcom had forseen the success of the Wii... :(

Edit:  To clarify, I'm saying if they had delayed the ps2 version to make it a Wii launch title, then the above may have happened.  As in, had they not released it on the ps2 at all, and just went straight for the Wii.

I could have done 750k - 1 mil.

I mean, look at Red Steel.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

I don't understand. What seven months of extra time are you talking about? Do you mean if they scrapped the PS2 development and moved the game in it's entirety to the Wii? I could have sworn there were only 2-3 months between the PS2 release date and the Wii launch.

Personally I think Twilight Princess would have cannibalized it. We're talking about two eerily similiar action adventures both featurning wolves, with one being quite possibly the most respected franchise on Earth. I personally don't think anything could have saved Okami.

I personally think it would've sold over 1 million.  Red Steel was absolute garbage, and it's currently sitting at 1.06 million sold.  Okami is an excellent title, almost as good as (and some would say better than) Twilight Princess.

If only...

It released in April '06 in Japan.  They would've had 7 months to port it and improve it, assuming they waited until it was actually finished to switch to the Wii.

Red Steel filled a gap in the lineup and it also featured something people wanted on the Wii since it was announced, sword fighting. If Okami were to sell more during the launch, wouldn't that also take away from Twilight Princess' sales? They have the exact same buying audience.

I agree. Shame that pretty much every third party thought it would fail :( Though I think this can be said to a lot of games, not just Okami.

Also, I'm not sure I agree about the "Clover still being around" part. Didn't they leave Capcom because Capcom weren't treating them right or something? I know Mikami left Capcom because he said RE4 was going to be GC exclusive but Capcom started working on RE4 PS2 without him knowing so he quit.

Capcom dissolved Clover in October of '06 after Okami flopped commercially and God Hand flopped critically (and commercially).

No, the difference was a year.

It released 04/20/06 and 04/15/07 on the Wii (PS2 date is Japanese while the Wii date is US though).

Also, I don't think TP would've cannibalized it THAT much. Sure, they both seemed similar, but TP is only one game. They could've picked up Okami as well for their second game.

It was released on the Wii on 4/15/08.  :P

Between it's release on the ps2 (4/20/06) and the Wii's launch (11/19/06) they would've had 7 months to optimize/improve the game for the Wii.

So you're saying they shouldn't have released it on PS2 in America and PAL regions then? It took them another 4 months just to translate the game to English, plus they had another game, God Hand to finish, so I just don't see how all of that could have been done to make the Wii's launch. Plus if they still release the PS2 version, and first, they would haver to contend with the people that already purchased it on PS2 as potential lost sales.

I'm saying they shouldn't have released it on the ps2 at ALL.  They should've just delayed it and made it a Wii launch title.
