Forums - Microsoft - My impressions of Halo 3 (SP only)

Well I have rented Halo 3, and having never played a halo game before, I was expecting it to be good especially after such ridiculously good reviews, and I am very disapointed

To start, the game begins assuming that you have played the first two Halo games before it, so there is absolutely no explanation of what is going on, who is who, and any of the controls. This obviously puts me at a disadvantage because then the story does not make sense, and I do not have any idea who any of the enemies are. I like the setting etc, but I cannot really enjoy it because NO explanation is given for anything, which really does annoy me

In terms of gameplay, it is certainly nothing special, but with most enemies being weird crawling things, there is not much opportunity for headshots or anything, which does annoy me, especially after playing Gears and Uncharted where you basically have to get headshots constantly. Also, the lack of a look down the sights button really annoys me. Also with the vehicle sections, I just dont understand why games like this hate accelerator buttons. They make it so much easier to control, and the sections are good, but they could be a lot better. But once again, I have no idea what vehicles do what and which one is which, and again some introduction would help.

Basically, I found the game to be really average, though I will play it through to the end. I do appriechiate that playing co-op will make it more fun, but I dont have gold so that is not an option. Just a bit of explanation, introductions of weapons etc would help, but the gameplay is fundementally average. I also dont like the way that they just assume that you have played the first 2. I can understand MGS 4 not giving you a summary of what has previously happened, but just a little bit on info on what happened before would have helped. I have used wiki to find out some plot details of the previous ones, and that has helped, but it just assumes you know who people are, and I have no idea who they are.

Oh yeah, and what the hell are the flood, and why would they include them, I hate it when games do stuff like that and try and make a level of something like survival horror (Uncharted!!!! why would you do it) and that level was just rubbish. It does mix it up, but the vehicle sections do a good enough job of that

I agree with you 100 %. I own it aswell and my bro had never played a halo game so he had no idea what was going on. I was super dissapointed in teh campagin but all my buds love the mutliplayer. Also notice how the graphics get worse the farther you get into the game. Like they polished all the multiplayer and the first level of the game but the rest... ugh

Pm
Drakes fortune had a great story until aliens / mutant w/e things were involved.

I basically stopped reading from here. No offense, but you can't really rate the third game of a series if you've never played the other ones to begin with. You can't even notice the differences between the games, which is, in my opinion, the best thing to do (and the best satisfaction you can get).

Also, why are you comparing Halo 3 to Gears and Uncharted? That's ridiculous! Just rate the game for what it is: A Halo game. It's like people comparing Battlefield: Bad Company and Call of Duty 4 (which is NOT the god of FPS games, please people)... o_o

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

Get a time machine and go back in time so you can play Halo and Halo 2 so you will understand and also play multiplayer. You really missed out, it was like Goldeneye times 100.

@ shmupgurus, the developers should not expect you to have played the first games to have any sort of clue what is going on if it is not a hugely story driven game, and any sort of introduction would have helped, even a tutorial of some kind. I dont have a manual, so i just had to guess the controls

I was comparing it to Uncharted and Gears because those are the last shooters that I have played and they are still on my mind

you can get headshots fairly easily on both the covenant and the flood. and i can only recall 1 enemy "crawling"

and why is it ok for mgs4 not to give back story but halo is evil for not doing it?

Ive played halo 1 and 2 and only halo 1 was good. 2 sucked 3 was decent under average now. 6.5/10 :)

I happened to like the campaign, and I didn't enjoy the campaign modes on the previous 2. Plus, online really adds a lot of fun to the game. My friend and I often edit levels with Forge and produce some pretty crazy results.

The campaign is pretty boring, yes, but multiplayer is where it shines. Also, if you put the difficulty higher, you have to use a lot more strategy and hiding (which can enhance or ruin the experience, depending on how you view it).

Anyways, you've been playing ICC Cricket a lot recently so maybe you'll get used to Halo if you play it some more. I didn't like Halo 1 or 2 the first time I played them (and I never ended up liking them), but I played Halo 3 more and more and I really enjoyed it.

My only complaint is that the people online suck. Every person picks Spartan and Hayabasu (spelling?) armor, and sometimes even the sword just so they can be a big gay ninja. Plus, everyone tries to snipe whether they're good at or not. Also, 40% of people are frat dudes, 40% are little boys, 1% are actual girls, and 19% are people who don't speak English or never talk (so hell if I'd know). Pretty much everyone online is a complete idiot. But if you're used to that, then it's actually a lot of fun.

I've played all 3 and the story is pretty abysmal, you really aren't missing much.

I thought the campaign was better than the 2nd (1st was the best tho) but honestly you're disappointments there simply b/c of your lack of Halo playtime. Complaining about story? Play the first 2. Controls? They are a lot like most FPS. I you play FPSs a fair amount it shouldnt take you more than 5 minutes to pick it up. If you can't handle that then well its you sry to say. The single player can be boring by yourself but if thats all you do your pretty much only experiencing 10% of the game. co-op and the online multiplayer are where the bulk of the game is at.
