Forums - PC - PC the “junior partner in the cross-platform strategy”, says id’s Carmac

Speaking with Tom’s Games at QuakeCon, id boss John Carmac said that in terms of what platform the company should be focusing on, PC gaming was now “junior partner in the cross-platform strategy.”

“We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we’re not making decision around the PC,” he said.

“It’s probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC.”

Carmac talks about the hazards of digital distribution, as well as how three DVDs would be needed to make Rage look as good on the PC as it does on PlayStation 3, through the link.

Well, he's right. PC is against X360/PS3 combined, so ofcourse it would make sense to brand PC as the "junior partner".

We are talking about the FPS market, and while PC's FPS market is increasing, X360/PS3 would be more profitable since:
- PC gamers usually stick to 1 or 2 FPS for years.
- There are alot more FPS competition on PC.
- RAGE doesn't seem to be Online-centric.

Anyway, I'm much more excited for Quake Live! That will be awesome.

"TG: But you also said that Rage will look a lot better on the PS3.

JOHN CARMACK: Well, "a lot better" may be stretching it. All of the key scenes, the things anyone is going to take a screenshot of are going to look exactly the same on both platforms. They'll get the high quality compression. But if you go into some areas in the wasteland, like behind a fence where nobody will typically go and explore, this is where the 360 version may look a little blurry compared to the PS3."

No take-backs to try to preserve 360 sales, Johnny-boy.  You said it.

well you are wrong in your last sentence, because he was comparing 360 vs PS3, not PC vs PS3.

ehhe, so the dark corners where 90% of gamers will never see might be blurry on the 360..

*Warning* Spin Control Ahead  *Warning*

Well then...  the 360 version will have superior gameplay since when ever the player takes a wrong turn the image will go blurry!!

Awww, poor little PC. Its getting no love these days.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
