True but as ocnkng said, if developers like 2K and ID etc. are starting to be able to actually use more detailed textures than fit on a DVD every developer will soon be able to do that. And in this case the available storage space will be a factor in how games look. And here the PS3 has an advantage. I don't think that the advantage is huge because you can get an awful lot of textures on a DVD but at least some crow eating would be in order for the BluRay will not help gaming crowd. Because they didn't add YET.

Lets say this is correct...you realize that people with STDV will not see any texture difference and people playing with 720p or higher may see it only if their TV is over 42 inches in size.

Besides there is only so many textures ps3 can process at "higher res" before things start to chug since the memory is limited and graphics processor is limited as well. I don't see much coming of this new "wow bluray has more room...lets magnify the textures" developer discovery...

People with SDTV sets will not be able to view any hi-res textures, Disolitude, neither on the PS3 nor on the XBox360

What makes you think that high-res textures will have no effect in 720P on say a 32" LCD ?

Let me demonstrate...

Below are 2 images... one is over 2 times larger in file size and resolution. But can you tell much difference at this size? Unless you are playing on a larger screen you really won't notice much of a difference unless youa re really looking for it.

Especially with the game in motion.

And if an FPS game was designed in such a manner that the player could never see objects and environments closer than several arm lengths away, marginally higher res textures wouldn't matter either in being able to discern additional levels of detail.

As it stands, EVERY FPS game allows the player to examine textures and environments up close. Close enough to see the resolution limits of the textures.  Even on a little 15" screen.

Scaleability isn't just limited to the size of the screen you're playing on, or even the distance you're standing away from the screen, but how close your in game character is standing to in game objects.

I'm sure just about everybody's noticed this when playing FPS games.

@Skeeuk
agree with you

BTW:

IGN Review score for Unreal III (PS3) : 9.0

IGN Review score for Unreal III (XBox360) : 8.5

It is better to die on one's feet

then live on one's knees

Oh Im sorry have screen shots compairing both come out??????????? Oh that right not. Then we have other site including the devs stating that there wont be much diff in graphics. Will there be who knows all this extra dev time should produce at least some diff.
BTW id also said that the 360 had the edge over the ps3 in power while the ps3 had the storage.
Unreal 3 also does look a little better on the 360 look at the screen shots lol.

If bioshock does look better it will be because of the extra dev time not because of blue ray.

Yep, and that's why Unreal Tournament III looks better on the 360... oh wait, it doesn't.

oh wait...it does

Ok this is the Bioshock preview on IGN and the observation about Blu-Ray occurs in the 2nd page.

Although it was still an early build of the game, the title looks fantastic. The water effects look much slicker, as do many of the environments as they are slowly submerged in water. It's quite obvious that 2K is taking full advantage of the PS3's Blu-ray discs to pack in cleaner high resolution textures for every facet of the game; while we didn't see any pro-pixel leatherization diffusion within our early sections of the title, we wouldn't be surprised if it makes an appearance in the later stages, such as Arcadia or Fort Frolic.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/897/897091p1.html

What they observe makes a lot of sense as the animation and AI routines can be handled by a powerful CPU and GPU. However what the blu-ray disk give is the bigger storage for more detailed textures that can then be applied over your raw models thus improving the overall graphics a lot.

Makes me wonder at what stage do more and more developers start using this advantage to make games with significantly improved graphics?

Apart from this the preview had lots more interesting details about the upcoming PS3 Bioshock, read on folks.

When they start seeing it as a good finacial move or when they start to like ps3 development like Inzomniac, Naughty Dog, Free Radical, and Criterian games, and I think Crytek [I think I read something about them enjoying the challenge of creating a ps3 version of CryEngine2].

Hopefully later this will give dev's the insentive to make more ps3 exclusives... mostly those would be targeted for Others and Japan where the ps3 can do quite well [US is appearantly gonna take some serious work.]

No it doesnt.  I have the PS3 version and a mere 25 feet (give or take) away my son plays the 360 version.   There are some lighting differences but thats about it.   Both games look great and run smoothly. Only a fanbaby would argue which one is better.

  Tifa got MOVES!

this is not surprising as we all know the ps3 to have certain advantages over the xbox 360.
