Forums - Sony - Bioshock PS3 version has better graphics because of Blu-Ray - Read On

Ok this is the Bioshock preview on IGN and the observation about Blu-Ray occurs in the 2nd page.

Although it was still an early build of the game, the title looks fantastic. The water effects look much slicker, as do many of the environments as they are slowly submerged in water. It's quite obvious that 2K is taking full advantage of the PS3's Blu-ray discs to pack in cleaner high resolution textures for every facet of the game; while we didn't see any pro-pixel leatherization diffusion within our early sections of the title, we wouldn't be surprised if it makes an appearance in the later stages, such as Arcadia or Fort Frolic.

What they observe makes a lot of sense as the animation and AI routines can be handled by a powerful CPU and GPU. However what the blu-ray disk give is the bigger storage for more detailed textures that can then be applied over your raw models thus improving the overall graphics a lot.

Makes me wonder at what stage do more and more developers start using this advantage to make games with significantly improved graphics?

Apart from this the preview had lots more interesting details about the upcoming PS3 Bioshock, read on folks.

This has already been posted. But thanks :)

PS3 has better capabilities than 360. This will become more and more visible.

oh sorry, I searched the forums for the topic but didn't find it. Anyway appreciated.

So PS3 is finally getting an edge on the 360.

I don't know. Somehow I doubt that. I would have thought that the I/O bandwidth and VRAM of the PS3 / 360 are still a much more important factor for texture details.

But in case developers really can use such huge amounts of textures in their games we really might see some advantages of BluRay for gaming besides higher fidelity sound and cutscenes. Who would have thought.

PS3's version of Bioshock looks better because it has had an extra year of development.......

The edge of forum fanboys finally being able to say "aha...we told you so...PS3 is better" without any concrete proof. How about we wait for the game and then make judgement calls?

I agree with you that I/O bandwidth might matter. Again we simply don't know the specifics. However the fact that 2K could use the bigger storage media to load more detailed texture thereby making the game look better is a huge revelation. Think about it, if 2K could do it then they could simply document the procedure and give/sell it to other developers (Sony could buy the process document). The PS3 is going on 2 years in the market and already we see more and more developers figuring out how to use the advantages of the Blu-Ray disc (MGS4 was another game in point)

You miss the point. This is not about PS3 bioshock looking better. Its looking better due to the power of Blu-Ray and this is not hype. High resolution textures are lots bigger, u need to still store them somewhere.
