They deliberately revealed the name long before E3 '05 to get most of the "jokes" out of the way, and the announcement contained a short spiel on what the name means, so I'd say they certainly planned it.

And the name is brilliant. Detractors still make puns with it and desperately hope that it will touch a nerve, but they never learn. The next console should be called "Balls", because that's what Nintendo's marketing team has got. BALLS of STEEL.

Yep I also thought someone at Nintendo was sniffing glue when I read the new name. But it grew on me and now all you have to say wii to someone and you see their face light up and you know Nintendo got it right.
