Yeah, SCE as a whole is a sketchy inclusion. Go with Insomniac, because they have had a major product ready for PS3 in three consecutive holidays, which I think makes them Sony's biggest asset as of right now. Obviously Polyphony could be on there, except it's been a long time since GT4.

The problem is, I don't think anyone here has really done the research on what games are developed by which particular studios, especially with the Japanese devs. I have NO idea what the studio breakdown is at Capcom or SE or Konami. Are Pro Evo and MGS developed in the same studio? Or is there a network of studios like EA or Sony?

I think my top 4 would be Nintendo EAD, Harmonix, Maxis and Blizzard. Those studios can invent totally new types of play, or take old types of play and introduce them to a wide audience.

And btw, what world are people living in where SE is still a mover and shaker in the "console wars"?

Some that haven't been mentioned but which had mega-hits recently are Ubi Montreal (AC, R6V, R6V2), Neversoft (GH franchise), and Nintendo EAD Tokyo (Galaxy).

Maxis?

I love thier games, but MAXIS?

The Sims has sold 100M games, joining just Mario and Pokemon in that club. Obviously a lot of those games aren't developed within Maxis anymore, but when the last big idea they had became EA's biggest franchise ever, I think you can safely rank them among the most powerful.

Isn't MGS4 the most expensive game ever created ? (or at least 2nd place after GTA4 which had like 50 mil $ invested in publicity alone).
That means Konami is pretty powerfull, producing such a monster of a game. Then again, maybe they used other criteria for their ranking.

No way. It didn't come close to Shenmue.

According to wikipedia,

For Konami,

Konami has two major studios, both in Tokyo. Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo has Pro Evo, Castlevania and DDR in it's umbrella, and Konami Computer Entertainment Japan has MGS.

For Capcom,

They appear to have one main studio, however I'm not sure what all is outsourced. SF4, for one, is developed by Dimps. But right now, they should be mentioned for Monster Hunter Freedom.

For Square Enix,

I think you'd just want to list Square. Enix as a studio isn't really powerful anymore, and it doesn't look like their smaller studio has been absorbed into Square's main studio.

Sony are there but Capcom are not? Capcom have more talent in thier little finger than sony will ever have........

and i love how people say that microsoft have no game studios.... this is only thier second console for crying out loud...... back in 1994 SONY had no developers....... and the only reason sony got in to the gaming business was due to ken kutugari stealing hardware and software ideas from nintendo....... when sony first started out in gaming they had NO developers.... They bought their success back in the day.... At Least Sega and Nintendo had their OWN hardware and software developers.....

Sony fans are hypocrites..... they accuse Microsoft of buying everything when thats EXACTLY THE SAME THING that sony did when they first started out in the gaming business...... tut tut tut

Sony is on the list because they have 19 1st party studios and a few 2nd second party studios( i think 5 or 6)...where do you think Nintendo and SEGA got their ideas for a console?...Atari

Sega and Nintendo both had thier own software and Hardware developers...... Sony didn't even like games back in the early 90's look around the web, theres tonnes of quotes from sony showing that they looked down upon gaming.... and they only got involved in gaming once ken kutugari got back to them with the hardware and software ideas he stole from nintendo..... so is it alright to steal and basically stick two fingers up at everybodyelse? Sony have lots of studios now... but when they first started in gaming they had NOTHING... even their 1st two popular franchises were not made by sony... Tekken (Namo made it) and Wipeout (Psygnosis).... so yeah, they may have 19 studios now... but they tread on a lot of feet and paid a lot of money for their success and thats the be all and end all of it.... so the next time a sony fanboy complains about microsoft buying things.... check your histroy first huh

Okay, but like you said, Microsoft is on its SECOND console.  Do they have as much first-party stuff going on as Sony did by, say, 2001 or 2002?  (Seven years after the release of Son'y first console, like MS is now, or two years after the release of Sony's second console, like MS is now.)  I honestly don't actually know the answer to that but I'm pretty confident that the answer is that Sony had much more by then than MS does now.  Can you tell me differently?

"powerful"

Where's microsoft? Seriously even if they made no games, they easily wield immense influence in the industry.

Rockstar North and Bungie don't exactly pump out the games. They only really have one major franchise each, though admittedly those sell tremendously well.

SE definitely should have been up there in place of one of those, because of DQ, FF, KH, etc.  Valve would've also been a good choice.

Also, why single out EA Tiburon but lump the entirety of SCE together as one studio? Same goes for Nintendo EAD, which is separated into individual (though lesser known) groups.

I agree that there are better choices than Bungie/Rockstar North.

I think they singled out EA Tiburon so they could list Maxis as well.

Wait what? Bungie has 1 franchise? Are you insane?

You people forgot about the biggest point and click franchise in the world, Myst.

seriously

being 15 year in gaming never heard of Myst

Seriously, if you are ignorant, it's not our problem. Myst is one of the best selling PC games of all time along Starcraft, WoW and of course, The Sims.

yup. Just last week I bought 'Myst - The Collection' - all 5 games in 1 box... awesome.

Where is id Software? Where would we be without Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake and all of their graphical developments they've pushed?

Bungie doesn't deserve to be up their I think all they've managed is one series that just happened to become very popular because it was one of the first good multiplayer and single player FPS for a console.
