Forums - Gaming - This is my theory of why JRPGs are going to 360 FOR NOW

Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts are the only JRPG's that have bigger time sales, specifically the former.

The rest of them like Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden, Mana, Tales Of etc. have good sales, but are more in the 500k - 1.5M range. (sometimes even less)

I'm not counting Pokemon btw

A) Microsoft paid them a lot for exclusives or timed exclusives

B) 360 came out first, so they had time to develop with 360 dev kits for their JRPG games

C) With the payment they recieved from MS, MS will have their chance to increase 360 sales to at least match that of PS3's in Japan or reach maybe 200-300k in Japan or America.

and if this all fails in the short run, if 360 sales still can't go any higher to reach current Wii sales in Japan, nor reach Blue Dragon software sales, MS gives up, Japanese Devs gives up and go timed or exclusive to PS3 with their JRPG's because let's face it, PS3 already has an install base of 2+ million compared to 600k for 360.

If people like to say MGS4 could've had 3x more sales in America had it gone to 360, well same can be said for Tales of Vesperia or Infinite Undiscovery in Japan.

I can see how hard japanese dev's and MS for that reason trying to make the 360 a viable competitor but who knows when they'll get over it.

This was all about money for Enix. Square Enix saw the 360's installed base as an investment. Microsoft saw a chance to broaden their playing field. You system fanboys are all jackasses. Games are games no matter where they are played. If you deem yourself loyal to a brand...you are only a slave.

Kinda like Final fantasy XIII. Nobody gave two hoots about versus until XIII was announced for 360, and you know how absolutely important versus seems to be now.

Its anti-360 JRPG, not anti-JRPG.

err what?

Even before the multi-platform announcement a lot of people were more intrigued by Versus because of which SE Dev team was working on it, its visual style and its more Action focused battle system.

JRPGs aren't niche in the way some have described. Most early adopters of Sony consoles have planned for JRPG support. Especially with the PS2 where the anticipated games of early adopters was FFX and MGS2. As a genre, I wouldn't be surprised if JRPGs and SRPGs combined outsold platformers, wrpgs, or shooters. There is a distinct difference of taste in early adopting core audiences, bandwagon jumpers, and late 3rd party support based casual adopters.

Claiming JRPGs don't matter is some sort of weird new anti-360 fanboy rhetoric. You should ask the Sony core what they think of JRPGs, and Japanese support in general. See what they tell ya.

See if they'd turn down a FFVII remake or Disgaea 3, for Killzone 2. (For my money, I have a feeling that most would rather have Tales of Vespiria than Killzone 2 in the end, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.)

Saying JRPGs are niche AND that they don't matter is single minded, cherrypicking, ignorant, propoganda.

I mean, JRPG's must be niche right. I mean nobody I know has a passionate opinion about the FF series, or has ever heard of games like Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts, Disgaea, Earthbound, Fire Emblem, or Secret of Mana. Those people, who know of such things, must be in some dark corner of the internet discussing them with the other guy who knows of such things.

If anyone has never heard of Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, they must've lived under a rock for years

This people saying that JRPGs are NOT Niche ( i dont think they ' re Niche ). Are these the same people saying MGS4 WAS a Niche Title? LOLOLOLOL talk about hypocrites.

Technically, MGS4 is niche because it uses gameplay mechanics and plot devices that usually don't appeal to the mainstream. JRPGs are not niche. Most JRPGs don't sell very well but most games in general don't sell very well.

If 3rd Party JRPG's were a niche, how come the most popular ones were always the top selling games for the systems of old gen's? To whomever acquired them goes the spoils (If they can arrange exclusivity). Sony acquired what used to seem as exclusive JRPG's from Nintendo and Microsoft acquired them in the same exact manner. Sony is no different from Microsoft you see.. multi-billion juggernauts from different market playing fields, playing a very similar game currently for market dominance, all the while, when Nintendo was and still is doing their own thing. This insolence is killing me.

I agree with you on that, but I would say that Nintendo is also a multi-billion juggernaut due to it's success with Wii and DS.  And what's wrong with that?  They're all trying to make money for their shareholders while keeping the lights on and employing people.

Anyway, the real reason I'm posting is I believe that the JRPG devs would prefer to release on PS3 only, but are using the money given by MS to offset dev costs.  If they didn't, their budgets would probably have to be reduced or perhaps some games wouldn't even come out at all.  I believe this is exactly why FF XIII is coming out on the 360.  Of course, the fact that it might get a some decent 360 sales in the US and "Other" doesn't hurt.

@Stats87

I agree Nomura working on Versus does boost the game face, but what about Sakaguchi and Mistwalker? Without Sakaguchi FF would be nowhere near where it is now, why aren't PS3 owners picking up a 360 to play JRPGs? The big reason that I picked up my 360 a couple months ago was because of Mistwalker. Do you think people have forgotten Sakaguchi? Or perhaps because Nomura's KH series was so successful and tapped into a market that doesn't recognize or even know Sakaguchi. I enjoy the KH series but I enjoy Sakaguchi's works a lot more, they feel like what a real JRPG is.

@the TC you need to go to math class or something you would compare 3x more of PS3s in Japan compared to 360 even though the difference is a little over 2 million while 360 has a much bigger lead in America than that puny number...I hope a company never hires you to make charts for them or I think they'll probably fail...

But wait! Whats this? A PS3 fan who follows bread crumbs? I'm impressed. People are only angry because they've emotionally put their lives into videogames and given their hearts to Sony since 1995. I wish there Nintendo fanboys to give off the same raging anime-ish fire, Sony fanboys give towards Microsoft out of worship. It's especially sickening to hear people who are from anywhere but Japan or even of desendancy talking almost in a nationalistic sense about the 360 getting the game. It's sad....and it's starting to remind me of the anime trend. If you have anime friends like I do, you'll know what I am oh so annoyed at. Yes....I watch anime and I love it, but I am not a maniac. While I agree that Nintendo is a multi-billion dollar corporation, you must remember that videogames have been their main fortay. You cannot say the same for Sony or Microsoft.
