Forums - Sony - Major pitfalls LBP will have to overcome to be a great game

Mendicate Bias said:

This is not a discussion on sales of LBP but on the overall quality of the game.

I posted this earlier but thought I would make a thread about it to see peoples opinions

There's two major traps that LBP can fall into

1) Too much freedom- sometimes too much freedom in a video game isn't a good thing, leaving the player unsure of where to go or how to even get started can lead to a lot of confusion. Sometimes its a good thing to be pointed in a certain direction, it gives the player a sense of purpose.

2) Accessibility to good user created content- With so much user created content being made for LBP Sony has to find a way to sort the good from the bad and present it to the players, otherwise people are going to find themselves going through hours and hours of crap levels trying to find the creative goodies. Since LBP is so centered around the community it is imperitive that the developers find a way to reward the most dedicated users and highlight their creations. A good example of this is Halo 3. There is a section in the game called Bungie favorites that is updated every week featuring the best of the best community created content.

These are just my opinions, feel free to argue against them

Did you even bother to do som research? this is already accounted for.

I didn't see your edit sorry about that. I'm not doubting the game will be good. The question is how good and the answer to that is in how they integrate the community into the game.

So have they revealed how finding the highest rated games will work? Will there be a site online that lists the highest rated levels or is it an in game feature?

By freedom I don't mean the levels that come with the game but the levels that the users create. For hardcore gamers I don't see this being a problem but most casuals wont have a clue where to start given a blank slate

With levels that people can create, they're offering tutorials. In fact, I'm sure any game that allows for some kind of creative content will probably take some getting used to for non-hardcore gamers, even Mii's.

With top rated levels, it could be user ratings of those who played the level and maybe popularity of how many times it was downloaded. I don't recall if they've said how this system works, but rather that they'll have it in place to seperate the good levels from the terrible ones. There was also a reporting system if people have offensive levels.

Both issues are no issues.

you just want to whine about LBP cause it looking to be truely great.

I disagree. If anything I think what might keep it from being a good game is that they are too tight with what then user can do... few people are willing to work to find the "end arounds" to some problems.

I remember with an early platform maker like this how i had to use an end around to make a character pick up a ball and throw the ball... by rigging it so that whenever he touched the ball it gave him a counter to throw the ball, then rig the "throwing" to timed intervals to give it the sense of randomness... and switching the animation... and paterns etc. Was a pain.

I've got a lot of expierence with these types of games... and the quality levels and games are always out there.  It just takes while to find or make them.

There will be games and things you wouldn't even of thought possible when you see it.

Two non-issues discussed already.

Take out the "Mendicate" in your name, and you have what I think of you.

highest rated games will work sorta like youtube. Most played, best ratings ect. At least thats the impression you get when they show the functions in the trailers. There will also be comments and some mods that will feature good content.

I love how I make a thread to discuss an upcoming game and all of a sudden I have Sony fanboys all over my ass when I haven't even bashed the game in a single sentence. Why are you so defensive about this game that your afraid to have an open discussion about it. DMiester J if you don't want to have a discussion the leave the thread simple as that.

google.com is a simpler way

haha probably but it still doesn't seem like anyone knows how their integrating the ratings system. Will there be an option in the game that lists the highest rated levels? Also how do players host their own maps and bring attention to it?

Illegalpalladin the tutorial sounds like a good idea but the game seems to have so much depth, will the tutorial be able to cover every aspect?
