Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft: Digital Distribution Will Outstrip Physical Sales

"Up yours, bricks & mortar - Plus, big Xbox Live spend coming to Europe" - Classy subheader!

Microsoft's VP of strategic marketing and Live for the Xbox 360 in Europe, David Gosen, has said that there is “no question” that digital distribution will overtake traditional retail.

Speaking at Microsoft's Gamefest event in London, Gosen said, “There’s no question digital will overtake physical. It happened in music and will happen to our industry." He pointed to downloadable content for Guitar Hero and Rock Band, as well as the success of Xbox Live, saying they prove that “digital will be the dominant force in future”.
A bit more enticing was Gosen's statement that we should, "Expect to see some big announcements coming from us about Live, specifically for Europe, in the coming month."
Oh – guess what? He ended his talk on a slide that said, ‘We WILL outsell the PlayStation 3’.
I really like the fact that MS is standing by their "We WILL outsell the PS3" statement. I think its the first time (at E3) that MS acknowledged that they do intend to compete... which is great for all 360 owners (and even PS3 owners)!

Well of course they think that. Sony thought Blu-Ray was the be-all and end-all as well.

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Duh! Isn't that what's already happening with PC?

yeah except that I agree that there is no way around digital download..... I think the last CD I bought was 10 years ago.... DVD video same thing and hopefully games very soon....

MS keeps talking about digital distribution. Why haven't they released any 360 games for download? If they are so committed to it, why do they sell 360s without hard drives. Sony has already released 6 full length games via digital distribution. MS should start doing and stop talking.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Well from a business point of view I'm sure that what they would like to see as it allows them to cut the retailer out and make more cash per software units/sold...( and digital means no used game sales so no cash lost there..)

And yeah, way to go being the champion of digital distribution and selling a SKU without a harddrive...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

When the 20GB model is all finished and the 60GB model is released as the main SKU, it will happen.

Just kiss the tip.

I don't think so.  The Arcade will be the best selling 360 at $199.  Most of the games that Sony offers via digital distribution are also offered via Blu-ray.  Certainly, MS could start doing this at a minimum.  I am beginning to think the only reason MS talks about digital distribution is because they backed the wrong high definition disc format.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

I must be the only person who prefers a carbon emblem of the game I own. Besides, everything I've read from this link just points out how bitter Microsoft is. Or perhaps it's just one representative, but I doubt it.

Seconded.

It's the way of the future, but you push the Arcade, Sans HDD, Push overpriced HDDs on people, and have no full 360 games on your service.  Even though you're gonna allow downloading the game to the hard-drive, you still don't have full games on the marketplace.

Yet Sony does.

So is this some sort of compliment to Sony?  ;)
