@Kyros: So, to sum up, you're saying "There will be a price cut because there will be a price cut, and whoever doesn't believe so is blind".

Sony has probably room for a 50$ price cut but I doubt it would happen before mid-october if it does..
. I really don't see it happening in this calander year ...
Sony has to report a profit on their gaming division for fiscal 2009, and with how close to losing money they were on their last quarterly statement they simply can't afford much of a price cut. If their holiday season goes really well and they move enough hardware and software that they will easily turn a healthy profit on their year end statement I could see them reducing the price of the PS3 early in 2009, but I would still expect them to wait until (fiscal) Q1 2010 to make that price reduction.
I think you mean a 65nm GPU, no?

Fable 2 isn't a big game. It'll be lucky to break 2 million.
| starcraft said: The PS3 doesn't have a single heavy-hitting 'PS2 upgrading' exclusive left this year after MGS4, whereas the Xbox 360 has Fable 2. Finally, the PS3's biggest game of the holiday season Resistance 2, will be easily overshadowed (at least sales wise) by Gears of War 2. |
Subjective much?
Why wouldn't the biggest game be LittleBigPlanet?
I agree that R2 is a big game for the PS3, but I personally think that LittleBigPlanet has a much wider appeal than R2, and I think that in december '08, LittleBigPlanet will sell more copies than Resistance 2, but that's just me.

Normally in Autumn come components new price lists, a $50 cut should be feasible. At $349 a PS3 is not an exceptional bargain , a must have for everybody, nevertheless it becomes more appealing for just another slice of potential buyers. Anyway, $300 and $250 thresholds will be much more important, just I wouldn't expect the former before June 2009 (but then it could have a much better result in Autumn 2009, when people is back from holidays and more likely to play instead of going to the sea and going out by night) and the latter before PS3 Slim is released.
But you're right that we shouldn't expect the same price for PS3 and XB360 anytime soon, for at least 3 years PS3 will be more expensive to build, so Sony can only try to persuade users the price difference is justified, and promising to support the platform for 10 years is just one of the ways to do it, it reassure users and developers and makes the former perceive a higher value. Emphasizing BD is another: even if users won't watch BD movies in the immediate future, they perceive it as a bonus that has its value and that may be useful in a further future, just like people buys SW with more features than those they actually use.

I think he's laughing more at your implication that Fable 2 is a game that would cause last generation holdouts to upgrade to a new next gen system. And I have to agree with Mafoo. OT: Definitely no price cuts, but expect to see bundles galore starting in the beginning of November. Bundles cost very little and there's no way they're going to standstill come holiday season when MS has $200 system on sale. Also, I must say, I always thought of the arcade as an irrelevant waste at $280. But at $199, they've really hit the sweet spot for mainstream success. Even I'm considering "jumping in." |
i dont know whats sp funny. Fable 2 almost got me to buy a 360, the only thing stopping me was the microsoft stamp on the 360 and that i was and still am fully convinced that fable 2 is coming to the pc. but i got a 360 now anyway so i can just get it
| dbot said: Sony will not cut the price. If MS drops the price of the 60 gig to $300, that would piss off the people that just bought the 20 gig for $300. At least Sony gave its customers notice that the 80 gig will retail for the same price as the 40 gig. |
The Sony Defense Forces spring into action folks. Ignoring reality and substituting their own. Attack Microsoft and turn a blind eye to dastardly Sony which on dozens of occassions outright lied to consumers. Up to and including a couple days before they slashed prices last summer. I for one prefer the blanket no comment from Microsoft rather then the outrageous lies Sony likes to lay at my doorstep. There seems to be no honor policy at Sony when it comes to talking to the public. Lieing to the masses is par for the course. No spin just lie to them.
By the way I went digging to give you a prime example be mindful he did this two or three days before they announced it. While at the same time advertisement scans littered the internet. Oh and do not tell me this guy was clueless. He just decided to lie.
