#3 - No need to repurchase your DVD collection since BD players are DVD compatible.

And that's one of the problems that BR will face that DVD didn't. Most people owned very few movies on VHS (unless they recorded them off TV). Since DVDs were often cheap, people bought bunches of them and have built up a big library. But where the DVD question was "do I want to own this movie", the question for BR will be "do I want to buy this movie again".

I can say that I will not be upgrading the vast majority of my DVD collection. And even if they come out with, say, Jaws on BR tomorrow, I might not buy it. OK, I probably won't buy it because I don't have a BR player - but I will by the end of the month, and at that time I still wouldn't buy it. Why not? Because I, like so many others, got burned repeatedly by studios double, triple and quadruple dipping their movies on DVD, we just know they will do it again on BR.

These two factors alone are going to surpress the sales of BR discs considerably as compared to DVD.

Some classics will not be repurchased, agreed, there are many old VHS movies I still own and never wanted to purchase DVD versions. Of course there are some that people may give in for. I know this does not speak for everyone but I have read around the internet with a simple google search and from a few friends of mine that if Lord of the Rings were to release on Bluray, it would probably sell pretty well. I know I would gobble it up. :) I have not rewatched those movies yet because I am eagerly waiting for an HD release.

I believe there will always be those select few movies that no matter how many times it is re-released, people will continue to buy it. Thanks to VHS,DVD and now Bluray my girlfriend has me stuck on my 3rd version of Dirty Dancing...

In terms of new releases however I see no reason to pick them up on DVD. Specially when prices are comparable.

Edit - I noticed a conversation about "Planet Earth"? on Bluray. I saw it in Walmart a couple months back, is it possible to find it cheaper than what the $80 my Walmart was charging? I have never seen it, but I am a huge fan of anything to do with Outerspace/Earth/Stars/etc... and am pretty sure I would enjoy it.

I have been excited about BluRay since way back when it was announced. But I'm sure as hell not going to buy one until they're under $200, maybe even $150. And if I do buy one, it will be a drive for my PC. Why? Because I only want to use them for storage. I'm not a movie collector. I get my HD movies via my OnDemand service or XBL. I really don't care if I have a physical disc for a movie or not.

I think the general public is starting to shift this way as well. You can get any HD movie you want now without having to leave your house, and you don't have to wait for Netflix to send it to you in the mail anymore either. You can order it up right from your cable box or computer and have it streaming in immediately.

THIS is what's hurting BluRay.

I did the same for DVD, the first unit I had was a DVD +-R/RW for my PC, I bought it when price dropped under  100€ and I got a player for the living room more than one year later. And the same I will do for BD, except perhaps this time I'll wait for the price to be under 80€, you know, oil crisis, prices skyrocketing and I have a new SATA DVD rewriter for my next PC, I must reduce expenses whenever I still can, so if food, fuel and energy get more expensive, I'll eat more pig and less beef, I'll keep my old car longer and change it only if I find a great offer for a low fuel consumption model, and I'll postpone not essential PC upgrades. And I'll keep on buying games when they go budget and I won't buy a Wii until it's under €150.

Graduating won't change much this, as the wage will be quite low for the first 2 or 3 years.

I think for me personally, the best option may be to get an external read/write BD drive.  I often hook my laptop up to my HDTV and use it as a monitor via the VGA port.  If I was in a situation where I had to watch video on a disc, I could do it that way and still use the drive to write discs from my laptop.

I;m sure the $298 Blu-ray players dont sell at all..... or the PC drives or the slightly more expensive players. The PS3 might have pushed Blu-ray into the lime-light but it also made it cheaper to produce a blu-ray player.

I look at it this way because I think it makes a hell of alot of sense as to why BD will eventually overtake DVD.

#1 - Prices will drop and be = to DVD player prices, we all know this.
#2 - Disc prices will drop and be = to DVD disc prices, we all know this.
#3 - No need to repurchase your DVD collection since BD players are DVD compatible.

So when people go into a store and see a BD player for $80 and a DVD player for $80 some of you actually think people will buy the DVD player? At the same time they see a new movie on DVD for $15 and the BD version for $15 they will once again buy the DVD version? This also doesn't include the fact of what will happen if and when studios decide to release on BD first or possibly... BD only in the future.

What about when new home theatre systems are released that include a BD player as opposed to DVD players, once again seeing as BD is DVD compatible.

Jeez.... can I borrow what some people are obviously smoking?

You guys can stand still if you wish. Only I think it makes no damn sense.

If my opinion is somehow seriously flawed, please let me know.

If and when prices are equal AND someone needs a new one... well yeah.

That likely isn't happening for years though... and most people already have players... by then VOD may be everywhere.

Good read. With America now all digital in regards to TV signals (just this year) and with HD Tvs dropping in price I see BD as being a growing market, sure it doesn't help that one of the world's largest economies is in recession and the BD player was released at $600, but now that it has won the format war and big releases are coming this year like Transformers and Matrix I see sales improving. Also I'm sure sales would be helped if the disks were 25 dollars instead of 35, but thats just me. The general rule of thumb though is to never trust survey's they are always stacked one way or the other.

VOD wont effect the physical media market that much, people still perfer having the physical media of a movie.

I use VOD to check out movies and if I like it I go out and buy the movie if available on Blu-ray. There are many people like me who do the same.
