Japanese publisher Konami has revealed its first-quarter earnings for the period ended June 30, and thanks in large part to the blockbuster PS3 title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (which shipped three million globally on day one), net revenues jumped over 116 percent to 70.8 billion yen (around $654 million), operating income climbed over 165 percent to 11.6 billion yen and net income grew about 47 percent to 5.66 billion yen (about $52.3 million).
Konami said that sales of Solid Snake's last adventure were "sensational" and that sales are still "steadily increasing" for the hit title. Sales of arcade and card products have also been "strong." The company also noted that baseball, soccer and music video games "recorded favorable results."
Not surprisingly, the Digital Entertainment segment of Konami, which houses the home video games business, contributed the most. Revenues at the group were up almost 129 percent to 44.85 billion yen, roughly double the sales contribution of Konami's Health & Fitness group, which expanded its services and opened new locations during the quarter.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, Konami is expecting net revenues of 330 billion yen, operating income of 45 billion yen and net income of 26 billion yen.
