If there is any amount of high sales for a few weeks it's just because people waited to get a 80G instead of a 40G for a few weeks, in which case PS3 sales will dry up leading to the release. All balances out.

Whatever it happens, temporary or long-lasting boost, Sony needed to release this new unit, as that price wasn't justified anymore for a console with only 40GB HDD. If they want to postpone price drops, they couldn't do anything else.
