what will happen?

nothing.

Nothing.

Profits matter more

Adjusted for tickets sold, the Titanic would actually be like 900 million at current ticket prices I think. I'm not sure the Dark Knight will hit 900 million, but it's going to hit some crazy numbers - wouldn't be too surprised if it went over 700 WW.  Edit - looks like Titanic at 1.8billion, but also Dark Knight not even released in a lot of territories WW yet.  I increase my estimate to 1.2 billion WW with that in mind

As for what will happen? Maybe studios will realize "Hey, we don't need some retard like Michael Bay making movies that are all special effects and 0 substance, when a tastefully done movie with just the right amount of pizazz is obviously much more popular!"

Sadly there is little hope for Hollywood :P But maybe, just maybe...

it might pass it in the USA but world wide i don't think it will, titanic had much wider appeal than dark knight

Aren't Titanic and Return of the King when adjusted above 1 Billion Worldwide?

@Sansui, hope you don't mean Transformers...
Though Dark Knight was spectacular.

Uh, Titanic grossed over 1.8 billion dollars.

That's right. Where is TDK? Under 600 million, last time I checked.

I loved it. I think it's the better film by far. But it won't pass Titanic.

Worldwide: http://www.imdb.com/boxoffice/alltimegross?region=world-wide

Titanic is at 1.85 billion (Not adjusted for inflation), while TDK is at 596 million.

Domestic (USA): http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

Titanic is at 600 million (Not adjusted for inflation), while TDK is at 393 million.

TDK's probably going to pass Titanic in the US by the amount of money it grosses, but not in ticket sales. I don't see much of a possibility of it passing Titanic's worldwide gross at all, inflation or not. Time will tell, I guess.
