He didn't call the Wii a fad, per se, he was talking about the controller. At least that's what the paragraph before it was talking about. Since there was no mention of Wii in the paragraph when he said fad, I'll take it that the second paragraph was siimply a continuation of the first.

The Wii is a major selling point for the Wii though. If the Wii Remote was a fad then the Wii itself would likely collapse. It doesn't matter what he said because the meaning is still there.

No, not really.

He can call the Wii-mote a fad but not the Wii.

The Wii itself is about bringing everyone into the gaming world, the Wii-mote is simply a vehicle to do so.  The Wii Balance board could (and is) doing the same exact thing, as could numerous other peripherals.

I'm not saying his statement has any stock, but the Wii-mote is not the sole reason for the Wii's success.

The Wii Remote is a BIG reason for the Wii's success. It's easy to use and that's what brought people to the Wii (mostly casuals though). Do you think if they made a non-motion control controller and bundled Wii Sports with it do you think it would be a success? Nope. It would probably be dismissed as another sports game title. The Wii Remote is what helped Wii Sports, and essentially the Wii sell. If the Wii Remote was a fad then the Wii would've collapsed. Simple as that. EIther that or sold a lot less than it is selling now and third party support would likely be a lot smaller.

Yeah, the WiiMote is THE reason for the Wii's success.  As well, it should be.

I don't think I disagree with that, or that I stated that in the post I made.

I'm saying it's not solely due to the Wii-Remote, but Nintendo's focus on everyone.

A big driving point in Nintendo's focus on everyone strategy is the easy to use and innovative Wii Remote though. That's my whole point. A simple non-motion controller would've likely had little success.

Well, we can't speculate something that hasn't happened, or didn't, but with the numbers Wii Fit is pulling in, and the fact that MK Wii, and SSBB (two of the systems highest selling games) aren't dependent on the Wii-remote, I'd beg to differ.

"but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development."

Did you guys read that properly????
They didn't call the Wii a fad at all, they said that they would never copy thier competition's technology because they think that approach of copying in general is a fad, as in the "approach itself" not the product to be copied from..... they're not calling the Wii a fad at all, at they most they would be insulting the MS more than anything for the many un-original things at their e3....

I guess everyone just skipped my post... again....

Oh well, I will just say this again. THEY DIDN"T CALL THE WII A FAD AT ALL IN THAT ARTICLE.

4 ≈ One

Wii Fit, which is a Fad on top of a Fad has outsold every Sony PS3 game.

In fact 9 Wii games have done that.

They should really focus on expanding that market to make the PS3 more attractive to a larger base to recoup their losses.

Why exclude senior citizens?

If you can make low budget games that will get everybody in the house playing along with core experiences for the person motivated to get it in to the house it is a Win-Win situation for Sony. Many 30 something male gamers who could afford a PS3 can't convince their wives why it is good for the house. (Cough - my brother - cough)

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

This deserves a facepalm but I'm too lazy to upload something.

Well, just when you thought some people would smarten up.............

The Wiimote is one of (if not THE) biggest factors of th Wii itself. The Wii is selling well because Nintendo had 3 big things:

Cheaper console ($250)
1st party titles
Wiimote

When people are deciding which version of Star Wars to buy, why is it they debate either 360 or Wii. Obviously they know what the graphics will be like for both, but thw Wiimote implementation is the deciding factor.

Why do you think RE4: Wii Edition is the definitive version? You could argue that it is because of the extras, but what about PES 2008? There are several games that just go right with the Wiimote alone and wouldn't be possible on anything else.

So when this guy decides to only consider Nintendo's methods of expansion as targeting senior citizens first and foremost, he comes off like a jerk. One of Nintendo's main points at E3 was the influx of women being introduced to gaming.

He DID NOT say the Wii was a fad though. He said following what people are doing to be successful is a fad, like coming out Durbys after you see how well Furbys sold.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

hahahaha i love sony.

they are so hardcore that they can not bare the thought of old grannies playing the ps3

Don't kid yourself. Sony would love to have the Wii userbase owning PS3s. This was an interview for GamesIndustry and therefore probably would only be noticed by core gamers so the sony exec pandered to the core crowd. They know that their current userbase/target demographics is widely dominated by core gamers and they need to keep reaching out to them.

oh lord. next time i make a message i think i am going to put a big sign next to it saying sarcasm

like the way they want ps2 owners to buy a ps3 but won't let them play ps2 games
