Forums - Gaming - Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, Wii is fad

That is why I am not going to cry when Sony exit the gaming market. That attitude will not be missed.

Good talking.
PS is for PS and high tech people only.

Take my love, take my land..

Laughable, but still not as retarded as Trentton, Hirai or Kuta. :(
Those 3 always make me laugh. =D

But that guy is certainly giving an effort in saying bullshit.

He didn't call the Wii a fad, per se, he was talking about the controller. At least that's what the paragraph before it was talking about. Since there was no mention of Wii in the paragraph when he said fad, I'll take it that the second paragraph was siimply a continuation of the first.

The Wii is a major selling point for the Wii though. If the Wii Remote was a fad then the Wii itself would likely collapse. It doesn't matter what he said because the meaning is still there.

No, not really.

He can call the Wii-mote a fad but not the Wii.

The Wii itself is about bringing everyone into the gaming world, the Wii-mote is simply a vehicle to do so.  The Wii Balance board could (and is) doing the same exact thing, as could numerous other peripherals.

I'm not saying his statement has any stock, but the Wii-mote is not the sole reason for the Wii's success.

Are you sure? I remember the first time I got dragged into someones house to go "bowling" very clearly. Sure the wiimote might be a "fad" but it was the original pulling factor for the console.

It would just have been another gamecube\n64 without it. Its what brings the kids and adults together, old codgers generally don't like playing games with their childeren (video games) but chuck a wiimote in their and its bearable for half an hour. This generates massive goodwill through word of mouth.

I had a friend who bought an Xbox 360, then sold it after a few months through lack of use. He then bought a Wii and was well chuffed "Come and play tennis against me, its amazing" he said...

2 months later he's sick of it, no games...boring.

But he still bought the Wii because of the Wiimote. So yes it is a fad, or a novelty. But its a novelty that sells the Wii and its on an individual basis. When the Wiimote became a fad for my friend, it didn't have an effect on anyone else who was yet to go through the...ecstacy -> boredom -> what have I bought? cycle...

they are so hardcore that they can not bare the thought of old grannies playing the ps3

Don't kid yourself.  Sony would love to have the Wii userbase owning PS3s.  This was an interview for GamesIndustry and therefore probably would only be noticed by core gamers so the sony exec pandered to the core crowd.  They know that their current userbase/target demographics is widely dominated by core gamers and they need to keep reaching out to them.

The Wii Remote is a BIG reason for the Wii's success. It's easy to use and that's what brought people to the Wii (mostly casuals though). Do you think if they made a non-motion control controller and bundled Wii Sports with it do you think it would be a success? Nope. It would probably be dismissed as another sports game title. The Wii Remote is what helped Wii Sports, and essentially the Wii sell. If the Wii Remote was a fad then the Wii would've collapsed. Simple as that. EIther that or sold a lot less than it is selling now and third party support would likely be a lot smaller.

I don't think I disagree with that, or that I stated that in the post I made.

I'm saying it's not solely due to the Wii-Remote, but Nintendo's focus on everyone.

Nothing new here, business as usual...

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, and the Wii is a fad

A portion of a GamesIndustry interview with SCEA’s Scott Steinberg…

Q
: How do you feel PlayStation 3 is performing with regards to the new audiences that have come into gaming in the past couple of years? PS2 has done a pretty good job, but if people are to transition to PS3, what is there for the family and social audiences?

SS
: When it comes to social or family games, there’s no question we’ve got the Rock Bands and Guitar Heroes, and we’ve got third parties supporting us in those ways. We’re going to make a bigger push on Buzz! We’ve got some great ideas that we haven’t announced yet that we think will broaden the casual and social gaming market.

Q: You mentioned the Blu-ray remote, and one of Nintendo’s key successes has been the accessibility of controls - something that’s not daunting to non-native gamers. What are your thoughts on that area?

SS: …I think the notion of that controller is a non-trivial point that you’ve brought up, that control and that familiarity is like comfort food - from my perspective, we lead, we don’t follow. And as a brand, Nintendo’s got their thing, and we’re not trying to get the senior citizen group to get into gaming, we’re looking to convert the PS2 owners and the tens of millions of installed base that were playing DVDs and playing games on their PS2, to now play Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray games with their PS3.

…So we’re all about looking at ways to keep that bar high, and from a peripheral standpoint the Blu-ray remote helps people get in and out of their digital media, but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development. It’s not the way we approach the marketing or the branding of PlayStation.

Okay.

So you agree with the Sony guy.

All is right in the world again.
