Why is it a fad if some people actually use it more often for their own reasons, rather than just for fps, sports or whatever. A fad would die, neither the Wii fit bb, the wiimote or the Wii online appear to be dying anytime soon.

Because a fad or craze is something insanely popular for a time meaning that the Wii is in the craze effect like the PS1 and PS2 was the last two generations. Each console generation has the console which is the main craze of the industry.

PSP vs DS, DS is the craze or fad for the handheld generation.

I have argued in the past that every console in the history of the market can be considered a fad based on a definition similar to the one you just gave ... Which I think is entirely accurate and fair. The problem most people have with the 'Fad' comments is that people who make them use the term in a negative way to say that the Wii's success is somehow different and worse than the PS2, Playstation, SNES and NES' success.

Man... I was gonna try to riff off of this interview & fake up a Rol-esque write-up, upping the stakes.

But then, I didn't think anyone could buy into it. I mean, when I read *this* article, I didn't buy it at first and went to the link to verify.

I'm stunned that anyone in the business world (even in the video game industry) authorized to give interviews could give such short-sighted and ill-advised comments. They're delusional at best and highly insulting at worst.

In response to a few people talking about the Wii in the context of not being a "fad".

It blatently is a fad, I think you guys aren't actually paying attention, a fad can still make millions of $$$...

Have you heard of a Rubiks cube, or a slinky?

FADS...by your defenitions they would not be fads. The wii is obviously a fad...

Sorry to go OT there.

Did Sony just ban old people from playing the PS3?

Damn it Sony!

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

How is the Wii any more of a fad than the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Playstation, Gameboy Advance, PS2 or Nintendo DS?

The dominant console of every generation, and in every market segment, has been amazingly popular and yet (in the grand scheme of things) amazingly short lived. No console can (realistically) be expected to be particularly popular 10 years after it was released, and you only get to being the dominant console by a wide margin by getting consumers into the mind set that they "Have to have your product now" ...

These may be traits associated with being a fad, but (in the videogame market) they are also the traits associated with being successful.

"but we’d never consider iterating off of existing competitive technology - because we think that’s a fad and that’s not the way we approach product development."

Did you guys read that properly????
They didn't call the Wii a fad at all, they said that they would never copy thier competition's technology because they think that approach of copying in general is a fad, as in the "approach itself" not the product to be copied from..... they're not calling the Wii a fad at all, at they most they would be insulting the MS more than anything for the many un-original things at their e3....

I guess everyone just skipped my post... again....

Oh well, I will just say this again. THEY DIDN"T CALL THE WII A FAD AT ALL IN THAT ARTICLE.

Fanboys are not going to listen to reason, but they cherry pick to create an illusion to live in.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

lol i say that, its more like "nintendo helped pave the way for sony"

Why do people even care what Sony PR says? Or any PR for that matter?

They're dumb.

Why we even post this stuff is beyond me.

Because if you Nintendo said something equally as stupid you would be the first one posting it reveling in the feast that would ensue.

If sony officially announces something, its news and its going to be talked about. Just because it makes you cringe doesn't mean it not something worth sharing. This gives us an excellent insight into the company Sony now is.
