Forums - Gaming - Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, Wii is fad

Huh. I learned something today. I thought you had to be 65 to be considered a senior citizen. I guess that's my mistake.

(EDIT 2: Ha. I just realized why. I was told by my grandparents that they weren't senior citizens until 65 to make them seem younger to me. Never questioned it.)

But, don't you think your response was a bit of an over-reaction? I mean, I don't complain whenever Nintendo does go after the target audience I'm in.

EDIT: Alright, I've now read some of the newer posts of the thread as I had left this window and now I've come back. What's the point of "reporting" the interview to a magazine? Do you feel better? I understand you can feel insulted over a what someone says, but come on it all seems like an over-the-top reaction.

As  to the question of overreaction see my post about 8 or 9 windows  up.

Do I feel better about bringing it to the attention of a  magazine devoted to the interests of seniors? Damn straight I do!
If I'm wrong they can just ignore it.

Even though he didn't call the Wii a fad, I honestly believe there's an ounce of truth in it. I mean, what reason are people buying it? It can't be for the games...and don't say something like Mario or Zelda as reasons, because otherwise, the Gamecube would have beat everyone last gen. Excite Truck and NinjaBreadMan aren't whats making people buy this system, it's the novelty of swinging that remote.......

That's like saying the analog stick in the N64 made it a fad because people bought it to play games in a new way.

did everyone forget fads can last a generation? look at disco.

Hmm...

See my point Rol? Even if the Wii and all Wii based products are fads they can be insanely popular. Meaning calling the wii a fad isnt a bad thing at all.

Being female is not a bad thing either, but most men feel insulted when being called a girl/woman (and vice-versam nothing wrong with being male but implying a woman is mannish is insulting) so the Wii being a fad (according to them) not being a bad thing is irrelevant.

BTW, the way Ps2 sales have slowed down I guess the PS2 was a fad too

@outlawauron: He could have said similar things without sounding so ignorant and unprofessional.

Instead of saying "the Wiimote is a fad" he could have said "Nintendo's controller is proving to be successful for their platform, but it wouldn't necessarily work on ours"

Instead of saying "we don't want the senior citizen group" he could have said "we're happy that Nintendo brought new people to the gaming world, and we intend to take advantage of that, along with our own initiatives for broadening our userbase".

If you're a Sony investor and look at this interview, what will you think? Most likely, you'll assume that SCE's management has gone mad.

read the article they never said it was a fad, but thats it's nintendo thing and it probably won't work for them.

i for one unless i heard him saying from him mouth i pretty sure like all the news are overexagerated to make news.

Sony needs to do make some serious changes with its cafeteria menu, because most of Sony's PR people seem to think that shoe leather is meant to be eaten.

I thought Sony was trying to catch up with Nintendo like Microsoft was?

They're just burning more bridges and insulting more demographics they'll never have?

This isn't even funny anymore. It's pathetic. I almost want to buy a PS3 to make the stupid assholes feel a little better.

But I won't.

It's a shame I missed 4 pages of magic in this thread.

Why is it a fad if some people actually use it more often for their own reasons, rather than just for fps, sports or whatever. A fad would die, neither the Wii fit bb, the wiimote or the Wii online appear to be dying anytime soon.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

You're right, I may have misread his (confusing and very badly structured) sentence.

In any case, the part I didn't misread is the most glaring and obnoxious.

LOL...Sony leads?...lol...3rd place doesn't look like a lead to me. They're delusional robots who will say anything to look good and refuse to give credit to anyone.

I read this news on a couple of other sites, and after reading half of the responses to this one, I am NOT surprised at the blatant SONY hate here on these boards. You're either ignorant (not necessarily a bad thing) of the context or you're a blatant anti-SONY/PS3 fanboy. We all agree that the Wii has attracted the "non-gamer" which is usually the female and "older" population, mainly outside the stereo-typical teen to young male adult audience. And can we all guess what attracted the "non-gamers" to the Wii? Maybe it's the Wiimote and the incorporation in its games. SONY NEVER said that they didn't need the "senior citizens" market. They are just not specifically targeting them. If "senior citizens" were gamers to being with, they would have buying gaming consoles for themselves to begin with. Otherwise, they would not have been attracted to the Wii for the motion sensor remote. And I'm all for gaming reaching a broader audience, but if all console makers and developers just target the "non-gamers," what about us gamers? I've hear more blatant SONY/PS3 hate saying "I bought a console to play game, not to watch movies," and we all know that that's referring to. So someone can argue "I bought a console to play game, not to exercise..." in regards to Wi fit, not criticizing the Wii, but just making a point since I just got back from running. I wouldn't call a Wii a fad, and the console is selling well. But how many of your "non-gamers" are not using the Wii as hardcore and some casual gamers are as a gaming console? I think more specifically, the Wiimote and it's application are a novelty, and thankfully, Nintendo is doing what they can to enhance the Wiimote for further application, keeping it fresh incase the novelty dies down. And let's not forget that Microsoft also said the Wii was a fad. And it's also sad that the blatant anti-SONY/PS3 fanboys like to take things out of context even further. They just take a piece of the pie when it's the whole situation they should be considering. Just because SONY isn't leading in sales doesn't mean they are not leading elsewhere like HD and arguable leading technology as time will only tell. Oh, and S.T.A.G.E., you're the one who delusional by taking things out of context and not seeing that SONY did give Nintendo their credit due...

"as a brand, Nintendo’s got their thing..." -SONY

So stop being a fanboy.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

If Sony was looking for publicity, they have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Google “Sony does not need senior citizens” or anything similar and you will get about 5 straight pages of sites, newspapers and gamer forums that have already picked up the story. I can’t wait to see the list tomorrow. Way to go Sony.
