Forums - Gaming - Sony - We lead, not follow, we don’t want senior citizen gamers, Wii is fad

Lets just keep this thread civil guys, its done ok so far. Everyone is entitled to their opinion - as long as it doesn't involve insulting others.

Because in PR, you never announce that you don't consider a group important enough to support. You announce who your main target is and don't mention the others at all. That is unless you are a total idiot.

To single out a group you don't care about is gratuitous and insulting. Seniors take enough crap as it is. At least that's my cranky old opinion and I'm entitled to it. And I back up my opinions with my wallet. If you disagree that's your right. If the AARP doesn't find it offensive then they don't have to publish it. Wanta make a small wager?

Even though he didn't call the Wii a fad, I honestly believe there's an ounce of truth in it. I mean, what reason are people buying it? It can't be for the games...and don't say something like Mario or Zelda as reasons, because otherwise, the Gamecube would have beat everyone last gen. Excite Truck and NinjaBreadMan aren't whats making people buy this system, it's the novelty of swinging that remote.......

...which is why, I sit at home randomly swinging a TV remote in emulation of a Wiimote.

Because I don't need games... I just like to swing something around!

Heck, maybe I should go take up cricket :P

I thought people were only buying the Wii because it was the cheapest.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

make a small wager that the AARP won't find something offensive? Hell man I'll go bet against the sun coming up or Paris Hilton getting an STD while I'm at it.

edit: that's a no....just in case that wasn't clear.

...

@Torillian: why cant you respect Grampy being insulted? Whats your big issue with it. I mean if the would say: we dont target gay gamers, then gay gamers would be insulted. They specifically state they dont want these people, hence they do not target them.

Sony should really be careful or their other products will suffer from this.

@Faxanadu
My issue is that it's silly to get insulted over a company not targeting you. Commonly senior citizens don't play video games, so Sony doesn't target them. Yipdee shit. I'm a white guy from Wisconsin, if I'm not targeted by some company because statistically speaking I'm not one to commonly use their product because of who I am what do I care?

edit: and he's not even just insulted, he's decided that this is a life changing moment where he'll never buy their products again and is going to try and rile up more people using a magazine.  Don't you think that's overreacting a tad, even if we assume you're right and there is something to be insulted about there?

double edit: I'll take the idea a bit further.  In my opinion it's people's inability to deal with the mildest comment that has turned this society into a bunch of PC bullshit.  He said the truth, his company isn't trying to get Senior Citizens into gaming.  It might have been a needless and stupid comment, but it certainly did not say anything bad about senior citizens, so what is there to be insulted by?

Let's just put it this way, if the Wii didn't have motion controls and all the same games, would it be selling as well?

Obviously not

Now if they didn't have motion controls I'm sure they would have made an HD system (I would hope anyway) and gone a different way. But BMaker11 was just making the point that it is the motion controls in conjunction with playing the games that drives the Wii. He just replaced the 2nd part with "........"

He didn't call the Wii a fad, per se, he was talking about the controller. At least that's what the paragraph before it was talking about. Since there was no mention of Wii in the paragraph when he said fad, I'll take it that the second paragraph was siimply a continuation of the first.

The Wii is a major selling point for the Wii though. If the Wii Remote was a fad then the Wii itself would likely collapse. It doesn't matter what he said because the meaning is still there.

thats because its considered a fad... and its is, like the multitouch in the iphone, that its simply another touchscreen.

If you think my attitude is so off the wall,  then why did  GamesIndustry.biz who  conducted the interview run  that portion under the headline:

"Sony: We don't need the "senior citizen" gamers".

For  the record  I am not an intolerant person or "PC bullshit" (whatever that means and please don’t bother to explain) or anything else that has ruined our society or nation. That's what governments are for.

I've played video games since Pong and owned almost all of the systems but no one before ever told me they didn't care about my business.

You are correct, he spoke the truth. Please afford me the same privilege.  I have just said how I feel about the interview. They took action, (by inaction) to support a group I happen to be a member of. I have taken action by deciding in turn, not to support them.

I'm sorry but you do not get to decide what I find insulting,  although you did contribute to the list.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. Further argument between us would be as pointless as trying to teach a pig to sing. It doesn't accomplish anything and it annoys the hell out of the pig.

sure sure, appears we're both too stubborn for this to have any results anyway.
